Surtani Named Big Ten Golfer of the Week

Nels Surtani was selected as the Big Ten Golfer of the Week after winning the Puerto Rico Classic.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – After a winning performance at the Puerto Rico Classic, Nels Surtani was selected as the Big Ten Golfer of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday.

This notches the first time in his career to earn this accolade and is the second Boilermaker to be named Big Ten Golfer of the Week this season, joining Herman Sekne as weekly recipients.

Surtani earned co-medalist at the Puerto Rico Classic earlier this week, sharing medalist honors with Virginia's Bryan Lee. Posting a -15-under par 201 (67-65-69), Surtani won his first ever tournament at the Grand Reserve Golf Club and is the first Boilermaker to win this tournament since in its 31-year history of the event.

The win was the first of his career and his second top-5 finish of his career. For the season, Surtani has a 71.41 stroke average with six of his 17 rounds being in the 60s. His second-round 65 was the lowest round of his career, while his 201 marked the third-lowest, 54-hole score in school history and the fifth-lowest in Puerto Rico Classic history.

Surtani and his teammates will compete in the Hootie at the Bulls Bay in Awendaw, South Carolina next month, on March 24 to 26.
