RIO GRANDE, P.R. – The No. 29-ranked Purdue men's golf finished seventh at the elite Puerto Rico Classic, headlined by Nels Surtani's first career victory as a Boilermaker.
Surtani became the first Boilermaker to win in the 31-year history of event, sharing co-medalist honors with Virginia's Bryan Lee at 15-under par 201 (67-65-69). Surtani's total marked the fifth-best, 54-hole score in tournament history and tied for the third-best, 54-hole tally in Purdue history. He becomes just the fifth golfer in Purdue history to have three rounds in the 60s.
Meanwhile, the Boilermakers finished seventh as a team in an event that featured 10 teams ranked in the nation's top 55. Purdue secured head-to-head wins over No. 9-ranked East Tennessee State, No. 25-ranked Ohio State and No. 55-ranked South Carolina. Purdue finished just one shot behind No. 4-ranked Mississippi and three shots behind No. 15-ranked Oklahoma.
Purdue finished at 29-under par 835 (280-273-282), the eighth-best, 54-hole tally in Purdue history.
Georgia won the tournament for the fifth time at 42-under par, while Virginia, Tennessee and North Florida rounded out the top four.
Purdue was the top-finishing squad among the five Big Ten teams in the field.
In addition to Surtani's medalist honors, Nick Dentino finished tied for 30th at 6-under par 210 (68-70-72). Herman Sekne finished tied for 44th at 4-under par 212 (74-69-69), recording his 10th round of the year in the 60s – the fourth most in a season in Purdue history.
Kent Hsiao finished tied for 53rd at 2-under par 214 (72-69-73) and Sam Easterbrook was tied for 77th at 3-over par 219 (73-74-72).
Playing as individuals, Peyton Snoeberger tied for 61st at even-par 216 (69-74-73), Justin Sun tied for 71st at 2-over par 218 (73-70-75) and Kentaro Nanayama was 84th at 6-over par 222 (74-75-73).
Purdue will be off for the next month before competing in the Hootie at Bulls Bay on March 24 to 26 in Awendaw, South Carolina.
