WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The No. 29-ranked Purdue men's golf team turned in the second-lowest team round of the day and moved up three spots into fourth place at the loaded Puerto Rico Classic at the Grand Reserve Golf Club on Tuesday.
The Boilermakers tallied a 15-under par 273 to jump from seventh to fourth place after 36 holes in Puerto Rico, now with a team tally of 23-under par 553 (280-273). Georgia leads at 33-under par 543, while North Florida (-31) and Tennessee (-30) are second and third, respectively.
Minnesota is fifth (-21) while Oklahoma and Virginia are tied for sixth (-19). Seven teams behind Purdue are within 10 shots of the Boilermakers, setting up a wild final day in Puerto Rico.
Purdue's 273 score is tied for the 10th-lowest, 18-hole score in school history.
On the individual side, Nels Surtani surged into the 36-hole lead with a career-low, 7-under par 65, good for a two-day total of 12-under par 132 (67-65). Surtani recorded seven birdies and 11 pars, including birdies on three of his final five holes to take the lead by one shot over Iowa's Noah Kent (-11) and two over Minnesota's Ben Warian (-10).
Over his two rounds, Surtani leads the field in birdies with 14 and is 7-under par on par-5's – also tops in the tournament.
Nick Dentino turned in his second straight solid round with a 2-under par 70, good for a 20th place tie at 6-under par 138 (68-70).
Kent Hsiao celebrated his 21st birthday with a 3-under par 69 to move into a tie for 42nd at 3-under par 141 (72-69).
Herman Sekne is tied for 57th at 1-under par 143 (74-69) and Sam Easterbrook is tied for 75th at 3-over par 147 (73-74).
The final round begins Tuesday at 6:30 a.m. ET, in Puerto Rico.
