EVANSTON, Ill. – Purdue Wrestling took match wins at seven weights, picking up bonus points four times on its way to a dominant 29-11 victory over Northwestern in Welsh-Ryan Arena on Friday night.
The Boilermakers (6-8, 1-5 B1G) ran away with their match against the Wildcats thanks in large part to a first period pin from Brody Baumann and major decisions from Dustin Norris and Christian White. The young bucks carried the load for head coach Tony Ersland's team, with six of the seven wins on the night coming from underclassmen.
Purdue got six team points in back-to-back bouts from to No. 32 Stoney Buell and No. 32 Baumann. Northwestern forfeited the match to Buell at 165 before Baumann bagged his first pin (1:30) of the season over David Ferrante. The Wildcat wrestler secured a takedown early, but Baumann reversed him before executing a nasty throw to get him on his back for the fall.
Earlier in the dual, the Boilermakers received back-to-back major decisions from Norris and White at 133 and 141 pounds. The duo both used a flurry of takedowns and reversals paired with excellent work on top to secure momentum building bonus points. The win gives White his second straight in Big Ten dual action.
True-freshman phenom No. 20 Joey Blaze battled for a dramatic 4-1 win in sudden victory over sixth-year senior No. 18 Trevor Chumbley in the only ranked matchup of the night. The rookie and the vet scrambled all over the mat in this one, each on the edge of securing the crucial takedown on multiple occasions. In the end, it was Blaze who won the scramble in overtime to avenge his 5-2 loss to Chumbley earlier this season at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.
Top-ranked 125 pounder Matt Ramos came one point shy of his own major decision when he defeated Massey Odiotti 11-4 in the opening match. The victory gave him 11 in a row overall and 10 straight in dual competition. 184 pounder James Rowley rounded out the winning ways for the Boilermakers with a 3-1 decision over Jon Halvorsen, riding out the length of the second period to earn a crucial RT point.
