Boilers Open Homestand With Drake and Brown

The Purdue Men's Tennis team opens up a five-match homestand against Drake and Brown this Saturday and Sunday.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue Men's Tennis team opens up a five-match homestand against Drake and Brown this Saturday and Sunday.

The Boilermakers come into the weekend on a three match skid with losses to Denver, Dartmouth and Yale. In that stretch, Purdue has seen significant lineup changes with two different players making appearances at singles No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3.

Marino Jakic has stepped up to claim the top spot in the singles lineup in the absence of Aleksa Krivokpaic. Jakic is 0-2 with his most recent loss coming to ITAs No. 60 singles player, Theo Dean. Freshman Stefan Simeunovic also had his first run in with a ranked opponent as he was bested by No. 100 Vignesh Gogineni in three sets.

Since its 4-3 win over Western Michigan, the Boilers have won a doubles point, against Denver, and logged singles victories at No. 2, 5 and 6.

SCOUTING DRAKE
Drake comes to West Lafayette sporting a 5-1 record having won two of its last three outings. The Bulldogs have outscored opponents 28-9 in the first six contests, sweeping William Woods and Luther. 

Purdue is the second Big Ten team to cross paths with Drake this season as the Bulldogs have a date with the Indiana Hoosiers on Feb. 9. Drake is 32-39 all-time against Big Ten opponents.

The Bulldogs have a ranked doubles team after the first ITA Rankings of the 2024 season were released on Wednesday. No. 48 Oliver Johansson/Matija Matic have gone 7-4 as a pair to earn their ranking.

The Boilers are 3-3 all-time against the Bulldogs, with the most recent matchup coming in a Bulldog sweep on Feb. 11 of the last season. Before last year, Purdue had won three of the previous four matchups. 

SCOUTING BROWN
Despite a 3-5 start, Brown will be another strong opponent from the Ivy League. The Bears have three of its last four matches after starting 0-4. In that stretch, Brown were outscored 24-4 by Clemson, Georgia Tech, No. 22 Michigan State and Western Michigan. In its wins, Brown has outscored opponents 18-3. 

Purdue is a perfect 3-0 against the Bears. This is the first matchup since January 2013 when the Boilers clinched a 4-2 victory in Hanover.
