WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Wrestling came away victorious in its first dual of 2024, racking up four pins and four tech falls in a 50-6 win over Lindenwood on Wednesday afternoon.
The Boilermakers (5-3, 0-0 B1G) rolled to an easy victory in their final non-conference test of the season with Big Ten play set to start in just over a week's time. It was Purdue's first 50-point performance under head coach Tony Ersland. It was also the most pins and the most tech falls the team has had in a single match in his tenure. The Boilers last had four wins via fall in a single dual against Division II Ashland on Jan. 19, 2014.
No. 4 Matt Ramos got things going with a pin (3:19) of Austin Kegley. A tech fall all but secured early in the second period, the redshirt-junior swatted away a single-leg attempt and stepped over his man for the stick. It was the 13th fall of his career and the fourth of the season.
Three more Boilers got in on the pin party, all three putting their matches away in the first period and all three using an arm bar to do it. Marcos Polanco, Ben Vanadia, and Tristan Ruhlman only needed a combined 4:54 of match time to earn their wins. It was the second win by fall of the year for each wrestler.
Purdue also picked up four tech fall wins in the heart of the lineup, rattling them all off in order from 157 to 184. The four wrestlers combined for 14 takedowns, 20 back points, and two reversals in that stretch.
No. 18 Joey Blaze started it off with a 19-4 (4:24) win over Luke Kemper. He leads the team with four techs on the season already, the most any one Boiler had last year was three. Stoney Buell set a new Purdue season high for fastest tech fall with a 15-0 (2:20) shutout of Logan Johnson, beating out the previous best from Greyson Clark by just six seconds (15-0 (2:26) vs. David McClelland, Clarion, 11/5/23).
Brody Baumann and James Rowley finished off the run of techs with 18-3 (3:46) and 18-2 (6:02) wins of their own. Both are now coming off back-to-back bonus pointers, taking an 18-3 (3:17) tech and a 9-0 major respectively in their last matches against Campbell.
The dual lasted less than an hour and none of the matches went to the end of the third period.
UP NEXT Big Ten dual season fast approaches for the Boilermakers, who face off with Rutgers in Holloway Gymnasium on Sunday, Jan. 14 at 1:00 p.m. with the match set to once again be streamed on B1G+.
