Shondell Era to Continue

Director of intercollegiate athletics Mike Bobinski announced a four-year contract extension for Art and Connie Euler women's volleyball head coach Dave Shondell.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Dave Shondell era of Purdue volleyball is set to continue, as director of intercollegiate athletics Mike Bobinski announced a four-year contract extension for the Art and Connie Euler women's volleyball head coach. The contract runs through the 2027 season.

"Purdue Volleyball has established a standard of excellence through the leadership provided by head coach Dave Shondell," Bobinski said. "The University and surrounding community embraces our volleyball team in every way, and that reflects the winning attitude of our student-athletes on and off the court. This culture of success starts with Dave, and we are pleased to announce this extension to his contract. We look forward to more exciting seasons in the years ahead."

The program has flourished under Shondell's guidance, producing 20 All-Americans which have racked up 38 All-America honors over their careers, 81 All-Big Ten selections, four NCAA Regional appearances in the last five years and a consistent place among the top-25, including its highest-ever national ranking at No. 4 in 2021.

"I am so thankful to Athletic Director Mike Bobinski and President Mung Chiang for entrusting me to lead the Purdue volleyball program," Shondell said. "From the day I was hired, I have loved being part of this athletic department and university. I am grateful for the amazing players, committed coaches, loyal fans and my loving family for their support and belief over the past 21 seasons. This is a very special place to call home. Walking into Holloway Gym to train our athletes is the best job in the world. I hope to continue as head coach for a very long time."

The program's momentum has skyrocketed under Shondell's guidance, seeing 12 wins against top-5 opponents since 2011 and the longest active streak among any Purdue team at 107 straight weeks in the poll. Meanwhile, Purdue's No. 13 final ranking in December marked the seventh straight year Purdue was considered one of the nation's top-20 teams when all was said and done. Moreover, he has kept the Boilermakers among the nation's elite, owning a 110-42 record over the last five years alone (.724 win %).

The Boilermaker community has embraced the program, with 94% of all sold-out matches coming since Shondell took the reins in 2003. Moreover, a historic 2023 season saw the first complete season sellout in Purdue volleyball history.

Shondell built on the success of his predecessors, coming to Purdue after serving as a high school head coach, and quickly propelled the team to an NCAA Second Round appearance in just his second year with the program. Over his 21 years leading the Boilermakers, Purdue has amassed 18 NCAA tournament appearances, including an undefeated record in First Round matches and four Regional Final berths.

Purdue is coming off a third-place Big Ten finish in 2023 behind a 23-9 (15-5 Big Ten) record and an NCAA Regional Semifinal appearance, all while Shondell coached one of the youngest squads in the team's history. Three Boilermakers received All-America accolades and totaled a program-record tying six Big Ten postseason honors, including two unanimous selections.

Shondell owns a .670 win % at Purdue, tallying 458 wins, which ranks eighth all-time among Big Ten volleyball coaches and second among those currently coaching. On the national stage, he is one of seven active coaches to lead their program for at least 21 years.
