WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Five Purdue wrestlers are headed out to Las Vegas for the 2023 U.S. Open Championships to compete in the U20 Nationals tournament for a chance to make the United States' U20 World Team. Matches start on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. ET with all the medal matches scheduled for Sunday night.
The group consists of five Boilermaker freshmen. Two redshirt-freshmen in Stoney Buell (74 kg) and Tristan Ruhlman (125 kg) and three true-freshmen in Brody Baumann (79 kg), Kade Law (70 kg) and Jacob Macatangay (61 kg).
Buell is coming off his first season as a regular in the starting lineup for the Boilermakers where he finished with a 12-16 record with 10 of those wins coming in tournament matches. He has plenty of experience in freestyle competitions, winning titles at the 2021 Central Regional Freestyle Championship and the 2019 USMC U16 National Freestyle Championship.
Ruhlman had gotten his year off to a good start by going 11-7 with three pins before having to take some time off due to injury. This weekend will be his first time on the mat since January 1st.
Purdue's Freshman of the Year for 2022-23, Baumann racked up an impressive 17-5 record that included a win in his Big Ten dual debut and titles at the Purple Raider Open and Greyhound Open. The youngster competed in both Greco-roman and freestyle tournaments in high school, winning the 2021 Central Regional Greco-Roman Championship and taking runner-up to Buell at the freestyle portion of the same competition.
The Boilermaker RTC's 61 kg entrant, Macatangay made a splash in his first season of collegiate competition as well. In his debut at the Clarion Open, he picked up a ranked win over No. 33 Kurt Phipps of Bucknell on his way to splitting the title at 133 pounds with teammate Dustin Norris. He ended the year at 17-4 with first, second and third place finishes in open tournaments.
Law was limited in his first season with the Boilermakers, going 3-5 on only three competition days. The highlight of his year came in a runner-up effort at the Greyhound Open, securing a pin in his opening match.
This tournament will help determine the U20 world team for the United States with the winner of each weight class earning a spot in the finals for the World Team Trials on June 2-4 in Geneva, Ohio. The top-eight finishers earn a spot in the U20 World Team Trials field.
