Purdue Finishes Strong in Fighting Camel Duals

Purdue Wrestling traveled east to compete in the Fighting Camel Duals where it won the last of its three matches on the day in a competitive quad meet inside Gore Arena.

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Purdue Wrestling traveled east to compete in the Fighting Camel Duals where it won the last of its three matches on the day in a competitive quad meet inside Gore Arena.

The Boilermakers (4-3, 0-0 B1G) finished the afternoon strong by taking down the hosts Campbell 21-17. Head coach Tony Ersland's squad picked up three bonus point wins down the stretch to secure the victory after dropping close loses to No. 19 Stanford (24-13) and North Dakota State (22-17) earlier in the day.

"When we compete and wrestle hard we're pretty good," Ersland said. "I was much happier with our effort against Campbell than our prior two efforts. We need to start believing we can fight with everybody and be consistent with that fight. I have a bad taste in my mouth because we didn't show up early like we could have, but I'm glad to see it arrive at the end of the day."

Purdue compiled eight bonus point wins on the day, two pins, a tech fall and five major decisions. No. 9 Matt Ramos went 3-0, racking up 15 team points on his way to being named Outstanding Wrestler.

Purdue 21 – Campbell 17
Ersland must have said something to his team pre-match because they came out firing against the Camels. Freshmen Joey Blaze, Brody Baumann, and James Rowley all picked up bonus points for the Boilers along with decision wins from Ramos and Greyson Clark.

Blaze pinned Gunner Endicott in the first period (1:39) for his second fall of the season. Baumann went to work on Logan Heckert, bagging five takedowns and three back points for an 18-3 tech. Rowley followed that up with a 9-0 shutout of Conor Maslanek to put the dual out of reach.

Purdue 17 - North Dakota State 22
The Bison chose to forfeit their match at 125, giving Ramos six team points in back-to-back duals. No. 18 Blaze picked up the next win for the Boilermakers in a 10-3 decision over Landen Johnson. A takedown in every period gave the true freshman his 10th win already on the year.

Rowley and Tristan Ruhlman rounded out the win for Purdue. The Corvalis, Ore., native Rowley came just a point shy of his first dual tech in a 17-3 rout of Aidan Brenot. Three takedowns, two stalling points, and a four-point nearfall were the result of aggressive offense from the 184 pounder. Ruhlman wasn't far off a tech himself, winning a 15-6 major decision over Devon Dawson with three takedowns of his own.

Purdue 13 - Stanford 24
The action started well for the Boilermakers in their first dual of the day, as Ramos set the tone early against Wyatt Richter. He racked up nine points in the first minute and a half of the match before he finished it off with a pin (1:40), his team-leading third of the year.

Youngsters Greyson Clark and Brody Baumann impressed in their victories. Clark roared back from a 3-0 deficit to take a 15-6 major over No. 27 Jason Miranda. Purdue's leader in back points added seven to collect the first ranked win of his career. Baumann battled for a 7-4 sudden victory win over Tye Monteiro, bagging a late double leg for the takedown. It was the first overtime match of his career.
