NUMBERS TO KNOW
4 - Matt Ramos is one of just four top-10 wrestlers to have at least 15 matches under his belt this year.
3 - True freshman Joey Blaze has already racked up a team high 3 tech falls on the year. Tied for the most any one Boiler had last season.
2 - With his 10-2 MD win over then #1 Anthony Noto, Ramos picked up his 2nd win over a top-ranked wrestler of 2023. He is the first Boiler under Ersland to do it more than once in a year.
31 - True freshman Greyson Clark leads the team in back points with 31, with a +26 differential in his 11 matches.
FRESHMEN PHENOMS
True freshmen Joey Blaze and Greyson Clark earned spots in the lineup from day one of their college careers and have already shown the talent that made them both top-30 recruits.
Blaze (9-3) made the biggest splash early by knocking off No. 5 Ed Scott of N.C. State in sudden victory. He was the first unranked Boiler to beat a top-10 opponent since Thomas Penola pinned No. 9 Quinn Miller of Virginia. He has since jumped up to No. 18 in the polls.
Clark (9-2) has shown technique beyond his years. He already leads the team with 31 back points and is tied for the lead in pins with two. He also has the fastest tech fall for a Boiler this season, beating Clarion's David McClelland 15-0 in 2:26.
NEWS & NOTES
• Head coach Tony Ersland is entering his 10th season at the helm of Purdue Wrestling and holds a 77-67 dual record.
• In his 10 seasons, the Boilermakers have brought their best stuff at tournament time. He has seen 195 wrestlers climb a podium in 45 different tournaments for an average of 4.3 per competition.
• In 2023 Matt Ramos finished with a 35-5 record which put him in a tie for 12th for wins and a tie for 10th for win percentage in a single season in program history.
• His career record of 67-19 (0.779) already has him sitting in eighth for best career winning percentage.
LAST TIME OUT
Matt Ramos wrestled his way to a seventh-place finish in a stacked field at the 2023 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. He is the now the seventh Boilermaker to climb the podium in Vegas three times, doing so in as many attempts.
In Purdue's last dual outing, the team hosted their annual Boilermaker Duals and came away with a pair of victories. The first, a 44-0 win over Indianapolis and the second a 22-13 win over Northern Illinois. Ersland wrestled an almost exclusively underclassman lineup as one of the youngest teams in the Big Ten continues to rely heavily on their youth. Of the 13 different wrestlers who saw the mat for the Boilers, only two were upperclassmen. The young bucks combined to go 14-3 with seven bonus point wins.
Against UIndy, six of the matches ended with bonus points and it gave Purdue its largest margin of victory since their last meeting with the Greyhounds, which ended 45-0 back in Nov. 2019. The team's last shutout came against Brown in Nov. 2021.
