KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Purdue divers earned multiple spots on the podium and seven medals total in the synchronized events over the first three days of the USA Diving Winter Nationals, a stretch that concluded Friday.
Greg Duncan, Brandon Loschiavo and Jordan Rzepka helped the Boilermakers claim silver in both men's 3-meter synchro and men's 10-meter synchro.
National Letter of Intent signee Tyler Wills won gold and silver in mixed synchro 10-meter, teaming up with Boilermaker Daryn Wright for silver. He also won gold with NC State's Bayleigh Cranford. Only seven points separated the two list totals (288.96 vs. 281.94).
Individually, Jenna Sonnenberg won Thursday's 1-meter qualifier with a five-dive list score of 253.35 to qualify for the Saturday's 1-meter field. She'll be one of six Boilermakers to compete in Saturday's 1-meter events.
Loschiavo & Rzepka were unable to overcome a missed dive (40.80) on a reverse 3 ½ (307C) in round 4 of the 10-meter synchro prelim, finishing 53.76 points behind Carson Tyler and Joshua Hedberg (825.21) in the cumulative scoring across the prelim and final. They executed the round 4 dive for a better score (58.14) in the final, but Tyler & Hedburg did not open the door for a comeback.
Including big scores of 92.13 and 88.56 over the last two rounds of the final, Loschiavo & Rzepka (771.45) had scores of 70-plus on all six of their other dives with a degree of difficulty (DD) of at least 3.0. They improved on their prelim score (365.10) by 41 points in the final (406.35)
A notable DD difference was a substantial factor in men's 3-meter synchro. Duncan and Tyler Downs improved on their list score by 29 points from the prelim (382.56) to the final (411.69) but Quinn Henninger and Andrew Capobianco won with a cumulative two-list total of 828.63. Their final two dives – 5156B and 109C – both carried a DD of at least 3.8. Dunan & Downs' highest DD was 3.5. Powered by the high-scoring dives, Henninger & Capobianco outscored Duncan & Downs (794.25) by a combined 52 points over the final two rounds of the prelim and final.
Henninger & Capobianco and Tyler & Hedburg earned the right to represent USA Diving at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in February. The Americans will aim to qualify for the Olympic Games in February, but Team USA's official synchro teams won't be decided until the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in June.
After both genders compete on 1-meter Saturday, Sunday's events feature the men on 3-meter and women on 10-meter. Action in Knoxville continues through Wednesday.
