WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – After a dominating performance in the Allstate Maui Invitational, center Zach Edey has been named the Big Ten Player of the Week for his role in Purdue's championship.
It marks the seventh time he has been named Big Ten Player of the Week during his career, tying a school record set by Glenn Robinson (1993-94). It is the third-most Player of the Week honors in league history, behind Evan Turner (Ohio State; 2008-10) and Cassius Winston (Michigan State; 2017-20).
In wins over No. 11-ranked Gonzaga, No. 7-ranked Tennessee and No. 4-ranked Marquette, Edey averaged 25.3 points, 13.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game. He tallied 25 points and 14 rebounds against Gonzaga, 23 points and 10 rebounds in just 26 minutes against Tennessee, then finished with 28 points and 15 rebounds in the title game against Marquette.
Over his last four games, all 20-10 outings, Edey is averaging 26.0 points, 12.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game in just 32.0 minutes per game.
His 28-point, 15-rebound effort against the Golden Eagles made him just the third player since the 1996-97 season to have at least 25 points and 15 rebounds in a top-5 matchup joining Wake Forest's Tim Duncan (1996-97) and Tyler Hansbrough (2007-08) on the list.
For the season, Edey ranks sixth nationally in scoring at 23.0 points per game, while also averaging 11.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per contest. He leads the country in both free throw attempts (66) and free throws made (48) as well as double-doubles (5), and has been named the game MVP in every game played this year, via KenPom.com. Edey is the current run-away leader in the early KenPom Player of the Year ratings.
For his career, Edey has scored 1,671 points with 916 rebounds, 165 blocks and 112 assists in 105 career games.
Edey and his teammates will host Texas Southern on Tuesday, at 8:30 p.m. ET, in Mackey Arena.
