Blaze Highlights Purdue’s Start to Dual Season

No. 25 Purdue Wrestling (1-1, 0-0 B1G) opened its dual season at the 2023 Journeymen Wranglemania event on Saturday afternoon, first winning in decisive fashion against Army before dropping a tough matchup with No. 3 N.C. State.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – No. 25 Purdue Wrestling (1-1, 0-0 B1G) opened its dual season at the 2023 Journeymen Wranglemania event on Saturday afternoon, first winning in decisive fashion against Army before dropping a tough matchup with No. 3 N.C. State.

True freshman Joey Blaze came to Purdue as a highly touted recruit and is already making a name for himself in the old gold and black. In his first collegiate dual action, he went 2-0 with both wins coming against ranked opponents. The highlight of the day came when he knocked off No. 5 Ed Scott of N.C. State in sudden victory, overpowering the junior for a throw-by takedown.

In the opener against Army, the Boilermakers took six of the 10 matches in a competitive contest. No. 3 Matt Ramos got things started by picking up his second ranked win of the year over the Black Knight's No. 27 Ethan Berginc. The redshirt-junior from Lockport, Ill., worked well to pick up a takedown and two-point nearfall in the final 12 seconds of the contest to push his total up to a major decision and pick up important bonus points for the Boilermakers.

Speaking of important bonus points, Ben Vanadia was impressive in his first dual match since moving up to 197 after spending last season as the starter at 184. He won in an 18-3 tech fall (6:28) that secured the team win for Purdue. Even a win with no bonus points would have left the dual up to the final match.

Redshirt-sophomore Stoney Buell snagged a ranked upset by shutting out No. 29 Dalton Harkins. It was the first win over a ranked opponent in his young career.  Greyson Clark was another true freshman making his debut for the Boilermakers. He picked up a 12-8 decision over Army's Zach Keal. Brody Baumann added another win over Army, coming out on top after a wild third period saw the lead change hands three times in less than a minute.

The matchup with No. 3 N.C. State did not go the Boilermakers' way. Blaze's upset of Scott was the lone match win for Purdue against the Wolfpack.
Up Next The Boilermakers will stay in Bethlehem for one more night and compete in the Journeymen Collegiate Classic on Sunday. The team will enter 11 wrestlers in the round robin style tournament that starts at 9:00 a.m. ET. Stream live on FloWrestling.
