SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Purdue men's golf team is in contention after day one of the Fighting Irish Classic held at Warren Golf Course near the campus of Notre Dame.
The Boilemakers recorded a 36-hole score of 6-over par 566 (281-285) to sit 10 shots behind leader Indiana (-4). Tennessee (even), Northwestern (+1), Notre Dame (+4) and Iowa State (+5) round out the top five. Kansas is three shots behind Purdue in seventh at 9-over par.
Purdue was in fifth after round one, but surged to the lead early in the second round, getting to 4-under par early in the afternoon. However, Purdue's counting team played the final four holes of the front nine (6 to 9) in a combined 8-over par to fall back off the pace. All five Boilermakers bogeyed the difficult par-4 6th hole dropping Purdue out of the lead.
Meanwhile, Herman Sekne continues to lead Purdue, sitting in a tie for medalist honors at 4-under par 136 (69-67). Sekne got to 5-under (6-under overall) on his round with a birdie on his 13th hole for the solo lead, but three straight bogeys on 6 through 8 dropped him into a first-place tie.
Sekne has now recorded five straight rounds in the 60s (64-68-65-69-67) and is looking to become Purdue's first back-to-back medalist since he won the Rich Harvest Farms Intercollegiate and Purdue Fall Invitational in the fall of 2021. No other Purdue player has won consecutive, 54-hole tournaments in school history.
Peyton Snoeberger had a solid day, shooting 1-over par 141 (70-71) to sit in T-18th after one day. Sam Easterbrook is tied for 43rd at 5-over par 145 (70-75), Nels Surtani is tied for 49th at 6-over par 146 (74-72) and Kent Hsiao is tied for 56th at 7-over par 147 (72-75).
Playing as an individual, Nick Dentino is tied for 63rd at 9-over par 149 (74-75).
Purdue will be paired with Iowa State and Notre Dame in Monday's final round, with tee times from 8:50 a.m., to 9:30 a.m. ET, off hole No. 1.
