NEW YORK, N.Y. – After appearing on the preseason watch list, Purdue tight end Garrett Miller made the cut on the latest Comeback Player of the Year Award Watch List released by the College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) in association with The Associated Press (AP) and the Fiesta Bowl Organization.
Returning to the field this season after missing the entire 2022 campaign due to injury, Miller is one of six Big Ten players on the updated watch list.
Since 2018, the Comeback Player of the Year Award has recognized college football student-athletes from all divisions of college football for overcoming injury, illness, or other circumstances. At the conclusion of each season, in a vote by a panel of college football writers, editors, and sports information directors, three college football student-athletes are honored as Comeback Player of the Year Award winners at the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl.
After missing the first game of the 2023 campaign, Miller has played in five games with a trio of starts. He has hauled in 11 catches for 110 yards and one touchdown, ranking fifth on the team in receiving yards.
Miller made his 2023 debut with a start and a reception on the opening drive at Virginia Tech. It was his first action since Dec. 30, 2021, when he caught a 25-yard pass from Aidan O'Connell to help Purdue beat Tennessee in the TransPerfect Music City Bowl. Miller's return was his first appearance in a game in 618 days.
Helping Purdue beat Illinois to keep the Cannon Trophy, Miller snagged a 28-yard touchdown pass for his first scoring grab since Nov. 14, 2020 against Northwestern (a span of 1,050 days). Last week, he led the Boilermakers with eight catches at Iowa, totaling 71 yards.
Miller played in 21 games over three seasons (2019-21) before a preseason injury forced him to the sidelines for the entire 2022 campaign. In 2021, Miller caught 19 passes for 165 yards over 11 games, including four starts. His biggest game was helping the Boilermakers upset No. 3 Michigan State, as the tight end hauled in eight receptions for 74 yards.
Miller and the Boilermakers continue Big Ten play Saturday (Oct. 14), returning to Ross-Ade Stadium to battle No. 3 Ohio State. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. ET on Peacock.
