WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Following a dominating performance to win medalist honors at the Windon Memorial Classic, Herman Sekne was selected as the Big Ten Golfer of the Week the league office announced Wednesday.
Sekne, an Oslo, Norway, native, earns the accolade for the eighth time in his career, just one shy of the Big Ten-record nine Golfer of the Week honors won by Indiana's Jeff Overton (2002-05) and Jorge Campillo (2005-08).
Sekne won his school-record fourth tournament on Tuesday, posting a 16-under par 197 (64-68-65) to win by four shots at Sunset Ridge Country Club in Northfield, Illinois. His 197 set a new school record by three shots and is tied for the second-lowest, 54-hole score in Big Ten history. His opening-round 64 tied for the fourth-lowest round in school history, while his final-round 65 was 10th. During his 54 holes of play, Sekne had one bogey which came in the opening round, playing his last 43 holes without a bogey or worse.
For the season, he has a 68.88 stroke average with five of his eight rounds being in the 60s. He placed fifth at the Marquette Intercollegiate and 13th at the rain-shortened Olympia Fields Invitational before winning this weekend.
Sekne continues to rewrite the career record book at Purdue. He is already the career leader in rounds in the 60s with 30 (out of 88 career rounds) and he has 15 career top-10 finishes in the 30 events, ranking fifth in school history in top-10 finishes.
There have been nine rounds of 64 or better in Purdue history – Sekne now has four of them and he owns seven of the 18 individual tournaments of 205 or better in Purdue history. His career stroke average of 71.41 is almost a stroke-and-a-half better than second on the career list (Austin Eoff – 72.82).
More importantly, in three of the four events that Sekne won medalist honors, he led the Boilermakers to the team title as well.
Sekne and his teammates will have a quick turnaround, traveling to South Bend, Indiana, and Warren Golf Course for the Fighting Irish Classic on Oct. 1 and 2.
