PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Purdue soccer concluded its east coast roadtrip with a 1-0 loss at Rutgers on Sunday afternoon in Piscataway, New Jersey.

On a rainy and windy day at Yurcak Field, the Boilermakers (3-7-1, 0-2-1 Big Ten) had a flurry of chances throughout the contest, and controlled much of the play, but could not get the equalizer after the Scarlet Knights (5-4-2, 1-2-0 Big Ten) found the game's lone goal in the second minute.

Purdue recorded a season-high-tying 19 shots, six on target, while holding Rutgers to 10 shots, four on frame. Both teams had seven corner kicks, a season-best total for Purdue, and the home side was called for 13 fouls to the visitors' eight. Three yellow cards were shown in the contest, all to RU.

Senior midfielder Emily Mathews had a game-high, and season-best, four shots. Senior forward Zoie Allen and sophomore forward Brooke Haarala both came off the bench and registered a career-high-tying three shots, and Allen had a match-best two shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Charlotte Cyr made three saves and Rutgers' keeper stopped all six shots she faced.

Rutgers took an early 1-0 lead at 1:22, as Emily Mason scored just inside the right post, with the assist to Riley Tiernan. The goal came off a corner kick that was set up by Cyr's first save of the day.

Freshman forward Lauren Omholt had Purdue's first shot of the day in the 15th minute, a great chance from distance to the left post that was just tipped out by Rutgers' keeper. Cyr made another nice save in the 26th minute off a free kick from 36 yards out, as she made a leaping catch in the top-left corner of the goal.

Purdue had several opportunities to tie the game in the 34th minute, with a pair of blocked shots by Haarala and Mathews. The second set up a corner kick, and the chance from that free kick was sent wide by junior midfielder Abigail Roy.

As the rain picked up, Haarala and senior midfielder Victoria Kevdzija had shots wide and senior midfielder Callie Ingram had a shot blocked in the final six minutes. The half ended with a long shot from junior defender Sydney Boudreau that was saved as the clock hit zero.

Purdue out-shot Rutgers 9-4 in the first half, though the home side had a 3-2 edge in shots on goal.

The second half began with a shot wide by freshman defender Zoe Cuneio just 96 seconds in. Omholt had two chances within the 18 before junior forwards Gracie Dunaway and Megan Hutchinson each had shots blocked, also from inside the penalty area, in the 56th minute.

Dunaway had another good chance in the 63rd minute that was saved, as she shot from the right side towards the far post. Allen proceeded to record three shots, all saved, in a three-minute span. The third was what nearly tied the game, with a strike from 25 yards away towards the upper-right corner. However, a fantastic save kept the Boilermakers goalless.

Rutgers notched four of the final five shots in the game in the last 15 minutes, but the Boilermaker defense did a good job of preventing any great opportunities. The Scarlet Knights' best chance came in the 76th minute, as the RU attacker got past the defense and was one-on-one with Cyr. However, Cuneio made a nice play from behind to prevent a great shot, and the ball trickled in and bounced off the post before Cyr scooped it up.

The Boilermakers return home for a nationally-televised contest against Iowa on Thursday, September 28. Kickoff at Folk Field is at 6 p.m. ET, as Big Ten Network will broadcast the action live. Admission is free for all fans to every home games once again in 2023. Thursday is $2 beer night, and there will be a bucket hat giveaway to early-arriving students.
