BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A pair of wins and six top-three finishes for the Purdue track & field team highlighted the second and final day of the Indiana Invitational in Bloomington, Indiana, on Saturday, April 22.
On an unseasonably cold afternoon at IU's Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex, sophomores Paul Goins and Rieko Wilford earned wins, in the 110-meter hurdles and triple jump, respectively. The Boilermakers added three runner-up finishes and a third-place showing to conclude the team's penultimate meet of the regular season.
Saturday's performances came after the Boilermakers opened the meet on Friday with two top-10 times in school history in the 5,000m, by junior Alex Frey and sophomore Nathan Walker, along with a victory by fifth-year Johnny Vanos in the hammer throw.
One of Purdue's first events was the triple jump, where Wilford picked up her second collegiate outdoor win in the event and second in as many meets. Her win was with a jump of 12.38 meters, on her sixth and final attempt. Wilford was one of two competitors to jump more than 11.90m in the competition.
Meanwhile on the track, Goins won the 110m hurdles for his first collegiate victory, indoors or outdoors. He crossed the finish line in 14.56, a personal-best in all conditions.
Prior to Goins' win, junior Nikia Smith was the runner-up in the 100m hurdles. She ran the final in 13.89 seconds, the fastest time among collegiate competitors. The finish was Smith's best outdoors in any event.
Freshman Jaylie Lohmeyer also posted her best collegiate finish outdoors, when she was second in the 400m. Lohmeyer crossed the finish line in 55.34 seconds.
Sophomore Praise Aniamaka tied his season best in the triple jump and was second overall. A wind-aided jump of 14.77m came on his fourth attempt.
