Walters Wraps Up First Spring with Boilermakers

Purdue Football wrapped up its first spring camp with new head coach Ryan Walters at the helm holding a final practice inside of Mollenkopf Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. The 15 sessions over the last month have given the first-year head man a good feel for where his team stands as they prepare for the 2023 season.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Football wrapped up its first spring camp with new head coach Ryan Walters at the helm holding a final practice inside of Mollenkopf Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. The 15 sessions over the last month have given the first-year head man a good feel for where his team stands as they prepare for the 2023 season.

"We got better every day," Walters said. "I don't think there was a practice we wasted. Our guys are doing the right things, working hard and diving in. Couldn't be more pleased with what we've put together so far. I'm excited to get all of our guys back and get ready for fall camp."

The reigning 247Sports Defensive Coordinator of the Year learned a lot about this Boilermakers squad in such a short time. He and his staff feel that they are in a good position to compete right from the jump.

"I'm very pleased with the guys we have in that locker room," Walters said of his team. "Not only from a roster standpoint, but also as a staff. This is our first time working together and it's been an awesome experience. Building relationships with guys is always a process, but I'm really happy with the type of men we have here."

Redshirt-junior transfer quarterback Hudson Card got comfortable in his new environment and grew his relationships with his new teammates this spring as he takes over the reins of what was the best passing offense in the Big Ten last season under Aidan O'Connell.

"I'm just blessed to be here and surrounded by all these guys," Card said after finishing his first spring camp as a Boilermaker. "They have welcomed me with open arms, and they make it a lot of fun to be here. We're just trying to continue to get better and fine tune all the small details in this offense. I'm pleased with where we are so far. "

Rising sophomore Nic Caraway turned heads all spring and has impressed his new coaching staff as he looks to build on a solid freshman season where he racked up 22 tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble.

"I feel like my spring went pretty well," Caraway said. "I feel like I'm starting to take over a leadership role on this defense and I'm fitting right into it. The new defense has a lot of freedom and we're creating hell for tackles and I'm loving it. I'm having a lot of fun with the new scheme."

With the spring now over, the Boilermakers will look forward to fall camp and eventually the start of the 2023 season which kicks off against Fresno State on Saturday, September 2.
