BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Purdue women's basketball team dropped the Barn Burner Trophy Game on Sunday at No. 2 Indiana, falling 83-60.
For the second straight game in the series, the home team set a program attendance record. Assembly Hall featured 17,222 fans on Sunday. Add that to the 14,876 on hand at Mackey Arena earlier this year, the total attendance for the regular-season series totaled 32,098.
The Boilermakers (17-8, 8-7) were led offensively by Lasha Petree's 23 points. The fifth-year senior was 8-of-19 from the field and 5-of-9 from behind the arc. Petree entered Sunday needing 12 points to join the 2,000-point club for her career, which she passed on a 3-pointer with 7:24 to play in the second quarter.
Purdue shot 42.6% from the field and knocked down six 3-pointers. The Boilermakers flipped 14 Indiana (26-1, 16-1) turnovers into 21 points.
Jeanae Terry joined Petree in double figures with 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting and 3-of-4 at the line. The senior also grabbed a trio of rebounds and dished out four assists. Abbey Ellis tacked on 12 points on 5-of-8 from the field.
Indiana put all five starters in double figures, led by Mackenzie Holmes' 20 points. The Hoosiers won the rebounding battle 34-26 and tallied 34 points in the paint. Indiana shot 53.3% for the game and went 11-of-27 from behind the arc.
Petree got things started early with Purdue's first five points, as the Boilermakers matched Indiana's early runs. The Hoosiers went on a 9-2 run midway through the frame, before Ellis and Petree cut the gap to five after the first with a pair of triples.
Again, Petree rolled early in the second, scoring Purdue's first eight points. After Indiana grew its lead to 10 points with 3:18 to play, the Boilermakers rolled off seven straight points with buckets from Petree, Ava Learn and Terry to close the half down 37-34. Purdue hit its final three shots of the frame, while holding Indiana 0-for-4 from the field during the stretch.
After shooting 50% from the field in opening 20 minutes, Purdue's offense cooled off in the second half to 34.6% overall and 1-of-10 from behind the arc. Ellis tallied nine of her points in the second half. The Hoosiers built up a double-digit advantage in the second half behind a 58.6% shooting clip and five 3-pointers.
