Wrestling Drops Final Road Test Against Maryland

Kendall Coleman picked up his first pin of the Big Ten dual season and Purdue got four more wins on the night but ultimately came up one point short to lose 19-18 to Maryland in the XFINITY Center Pavilion Friday night.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Kendall Coleman picked up his first pin of the Big Ten dual season and Purdue got four more wins on the night but ultimately came up one point short to lose 19-18 to Maryland in the XFINITY Center Pavilion Friday night.

The Boilermakers drop their penultimate dual of the season despite splitting the matches with the Terrapins five apiece. The wins gave Purdue an eight-point lead with two weights left to wrestle, but a pin and a decision for Maryland at 197 and 285 turned the tide in their favor.

The massive fall from No. 6 Coleman was backed up by decisions from No. 3 Matt Ramos, Dustin Norris, No. 13 Parker Filius and Ben Vanadia, but it would not be enough to give the Boilermakers their first Big Ten dual win of the season.

The momentum peaked for Purdue in the 157-pound match when redshirt-senior Kendall Coleman showed off his strength to put Michael North on his back for a first period pin (2:23). He had just picked up back points and had North on the ropes before managing to disengage from the previous move and immediately throw a new one to put the match away for good. It was Coleman's third win by fall and his 11th bonus point victory of the season.

Purdue started the dual with three straight wins, the first of which came from redshirt-sophomore Matt Ramos. His 10-3 decision over No. 17 Braxton Brown was his eighth win over a ranked opponent and his sixth in a row. He has won 10 of his last 11 matches and has only given up one takedown in that stretch.

133-pound redshirt-freshman Dustin Norris picked up a 3-0 decision over King Sandoval for his first dual shutout. The Sixth-year senior Filius followed that up with a decision of his own, beating Kal Miller 8-3 by grabbing a takedown in all three periods. It is the 75th career win for the Havre, Mont., product who is set to be honored on senior day on Sunday along with Coleman and teammates Brennan Doyle, Kooper Loehr and Thomas Penola.

The final win of the evening came from the 184-pounder Vanadia, who also earned an 8-3 win by taking down Kevin Makosy. A big first period for Vanadia gave him a 4-1 lead with a big advantage in riding time, and then a third period takedown put the match away.

Purdue takes the mat for the final dual of the season against No. 13 Northwestern on Sunday at noon ET. The aforementioned senior day ceremony will take place following the dual.
