TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Purdue softball team defeated Longwood, 2-1, in the season-opener which took place over two days. The matchup began Friday, but due to rain and thunderstorms causing delays throughout the day, the game was halted after four and a half innings and a tied 1-1 score. It was resumed at 9 a.m. ET on Saturday morning.
On Friday, Purdue led the game after Banks scored in the third inning, thanks to a wild pitch. Then, in the fifth inning, the Longwood Lancers produced a run after a controversial call that had the eventual scorer make-base on a walk with a full count.
The Boilermakers wasted no time on Saturday, starting the game with Banks on first and Kiara Dillon at-bat with no outs. After Dillon reached on a fielder's choice, a wild pitch advanced both runners before 2022 NFCA all-region honoree Alex Echazarreta recorded a sacrifice hit to bring Banks home from third.
Mo Wimpee secured the win, leading the team in the circle with four strikeouts. Wimpee pitched the full five innings Friday, however Echazarreta came in relief for the final two innings on Saturday, recording her first two strikeouts of the season.
Banks went 2-2 at the plate, the only player on either team to bat 1.000 in the outing.
In total, the Boilermakers out-hit the Lancers 5-4, while being edged in runners left on-base, 4-6. No errors were committed.
SCHEDULE UPDATE: Due to the impact of weather and Lipscomb travel plans, Purdue will now take on No. 5 Florida State tonight at 6:30 p.m. ET or 30 minutes following Lipscomb vs. Longwood, which is slated to start at 4 p.m. ET. Please follow @PurdueSoftball on Twitter for the latest information.
