ROSEMONT, Ill. – Maggie Love and Daryn Wright teamed up for a sweep of the Big Ten weekly awards after sweeping their individual events in Purdue women's swimming & diving's dual meet victory at Illinois.
Love was named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week for the second time this season, becoming just the fifth Boilermaker on the women's side – and first since Allie Davis in 2015-16 – to accomplish the feat
Wright swept the Big Ten Diver of the Week and Freshman of the Week honors. She becomes Purdue's first female diver to do so since Freshman of the Week was added to the league's awards program for swimming & diving midway through the 2011-12 season. Casey Matthews was Purdue's last female freshman to win Big Ten Diver of the Week (in February 2009).
In the Boilermakers' first trip to Champaign in 31 years, Love swept the 100 and 200 breaststroke and was also victorious in the 200 IM. She won multiple events at a meet for the fourth time this season and leads the team with 10 individual event wins. The sophomore raced in the 200 breast for the first this season and despite the heavy yardage logged during the winter training camp over the semester break, accounted for the team's third-fastest time of the season in the event.
Wright swept the springboard events, posting a pair of team season-best scores, marks that moved her into 10th place in team history on both 1-meter (321.60) and 3-meter (354.53). The freshman is now the top-ranked active Boilermaker on both springboards.
Together, Love and Wright accounted for five of Purdue's eight victories in a tightly contested dual that was decided by only 17 points (158.5-141.5). They were also part of at least one 1-2-3 finish, which ultimately proved to be the difference in the meet after both teams finished with eight event wins apiece. Purdue went 1-2-3 in both diving events and 1-2 in the 100 breast.
PURDUE WOMEN TO WIN MULTIPLE BIG TEN SWIMMER OF THE WEEK AWARDS IN SAME SEASON
* – The Big Ten selected an Athlete of the Month for Swimming & Diving from 1989-90 through 1997-98
• Marissa Watts – 1995-96*
• Lisa Dolansky – 2001-02
• Carly Mercer (3) – 2013-14
• Allie Davis – 2015-16
• Maggie Love – 2022-23
Around the Big Ten, Love joins Indiana's Anna Peplowski among women to win Big Ten Swimmer of the Week multiple times this season. Wright is the first female in the league to claim Diver and Freshman of the Week. Iowa is the only other women's team to sweep the three awards in the same week, doing so for awards announced Dec. 14.
January 2014 marked the only other time the Purdue women swept the three Big Ten weekly awards since Freshman of the Week was added. Carly Mercer, Michelle Cabassol and Meagan Lim teamed up for the trifecta that season.
Wright joins Jordan Rzepka (Oct. 19) and Sophie McAfee (Nov. 23) as Boilermakers to win Big Ten Diver of the Week honors this season. The Purdue women have not had two different Big Ten Diver of the Week winners since 2013-14 (Matthews and Cabassol).
