Las Vegas, Nev. – Matt Ramos, Kendall Coleman and Parker Filius went undefeated in the second session to stay alive in their brackets and guarantee spots on the podium Saturday at the 2022 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. The trio went a collective 4-0 in the night cap, all against ranked opposition, and 9-1 on the day to lead the Boilermaker into the final rounds.
Coleman and Ramos both punched their tickets into the championship semi-finals thanks in part to impressive counter-attack takedowns. Coleman caught his opponent, Northwestern's No. 16 Trevor Chumbley, off-balance and pulled him into a takedown with just over a minute left in the match to take the victory. With the win, Coleman became the sixth three-time CKLV medal winner in program history.
Ramos pulled off this incredible scrambe to secure his win and see himself into his first CKLV semifinal.
Ramos, the No. 2 seed at 125-pounds, only needed two wins to jump into the semifinals after starting with a bye. He took down No. 22 Jake Ferri of Kent State in the night session on Friday in a 6-2 decision that was finished off by his crazy move. The redshirt sophomore is now 11-0 on the year, scoring first in every single one of those matches. He will faces a former All-American in the third seed in the tournament and No. 10 ranked Brandon Kaylor of Oregon State in his opening bout tomorrow.
The redshirt senior 157-pounder Coleman won his first two matches of the day with ease as he claimed 10-5 and 6-1 decisions before facing a tougher test against Chumbley. Coleman took an early 4-1 lead in the first, but could not escape from the down position in the second period to keep the match close. As the Northwestern wrestler chased an equalizer, Coleman hit him on the counter for two to effectively seal the win.
With eight takedowns on the day, he takes the lead for the most on the team this season with 42 and moves into sole possesion of the 16th most by a Boilermaker in their career with 256. He has not surrendered a takedown yet in Las Vegas and will look to keep the streak alive against Michigan's top-seeded No. 3 Will Lewan on Saturday.
Filius bounced back from a second round loss to No. 15 Cleveland Belton of Oregon State to rattle off three straight wins to make it past the blood rounds and stay alive in the consolation bracket. Two of those wins came in the second session and both were against ranked opponents. He started with a 4-2 decision over Columbia's No. 26 Matt Kazimir and followed that up with his best performance of the day in a 9-2 victory over Cornell's No. 16 Vince Cornella.
Matches will start around 1:00 p.m. ET and be streamed on FloWrestling.
