The 2022-23 Purdue wrestling team is set to start its season on the road this Sunday at the Clarion Open in Clarion, Pa.

West Lafayette, Ind. – The 2022-23 Purdue wrestling team is set to start its season on the road this Sunday at the Clarion Open in Clarion, Pa.
  Head coach Tony Ersland is traveling an unprecedented 22 wrestlers for the varsity competition thanks to a NCAA rules change regarding outside competition that allows the program and the student-athletes more flexibility on competing attached.

Thanks to the change, 13 Boilermakers are slated to make their varsity debut on Sunday. Sophomores Stoney Buell, Hayden Copass, Hayden Filipovich, Dustin Norris, Jaden Reynolds, Tristan Ruhlman, Ben Vanadia and Christian White are joined by true freshmen Brody Baumann, Nate Camiscioli, Brac Hooper, Jacob Macatangay and Sean Pitts in donning the old gold and black for the first time this weekend.
 
Matches will start at 9 a.m. ET in the Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium with FloWrestling handling the streaming and live stats services. Clarion Connections It has been almost 30 years since the last time the Boilermakers made the trek to Clarion, Pa. and it will only be the third time in program history. The previous trips were all for dual meets and Purdue picked up wins over Clarion and Army on those occasions.
 
Purdue holds a 4-2 dual record over the Golden Eagles. The Boilermakers won the pair's last contest 34-6 as a part of the 2019 Boilermaker Duals. A then sophomore Parker Filius snagged a fall to start the dual and then freshman Kendall Coleman added a 13-7 win two matches later. Playing The Field Thirteen collegiate programs make up the field of competitors in Clarion this weekend. Ersland's squad will get a first look at a future dual opponent in fellow Big Ten team Maryland.
 
Brown, Bucknell, Buffalo, Clarion, Cornell, Edinboro, Gardner-Webb, Kent State, Navy, Pitt Johnstown, and Pittsburgh make up the rest of the group.

    Boilermaker Breakdown Ersland brings back four NCAA qualifiers from last year's squad that went 10-5 in dual action, highlighted by wins over a then-ranked No. 9 Nebraska and No. 16 Minnesota. That experience is paired with an influx of young talent, as the team has 17 underclassmen to just 11 upperclassmen.
 
All four of the returning qualifiers, Matt Ramos, Parker Filius, Kendall Coleman, and Thomas Penola, start the season ranked in the top-15 across every national poll. Ramos and Penola crack the top-10 while Filius and Coleman sit at No. 12 and No. 14 respectively. Transfer Jake Null earned his first ever nod in the rankings, coming in at No. 33.

Season Preview: 125-157 | 165-285
  Return to the Mat The Boilermakers got their first taste of competition last Friday in the annual Purdue Wrestle-Offs. The event saw 18 matches between 22 different wrestlers with five ending in bonus point victories and two going into extra periods.
 
Ramos, Filius and Coleman went undefeated on the night and outscored their opponents 59-32. Juniors Trey Kruse, Cooper Noehre and Macartney Parkinson and sophomore Hayden Copass all also snagged multiple wins on the evening.
  News and Notes • Tony Ersland is entering is eighth season at the helm of the Purdue wrestling program and owns a 70-55 dual record.

• With 214 career takedowns, Kendall Coleman is just 10 shy of breaking into the Purdue all-time career takedowns list. Colton Salazar (2004-11) currently holds the 20th spot with 224.

• Matt Ramos garnered the biggest storyline of the offseason for the Boilermakers when he took the 57kg title at the 2022 U.S. Open tournament. He was the first member of the Boilermaker Regional Training Center to win an Open title since former assistant coach Kendrick Maple won the 61 kg title in 2017.
