WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue soccer team lost to No. 10 Rutgers 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Folk Field.
Playing their fourth ranked foe of the season, the Boilermakers faced their third top-18 opponent in their last seven games. Rutgers is the third ranked team to visit Folk Field in 2022.
The Scarlet Knights (11-1-1, 3-1-1 Big Ten) scored two early goals, in the fifth and 12th minutes, and found their final goal in the 36th minute. Rutgers out-shot Purdue 26-10, and had an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal. However, it was 7-6 in shots and 3-1 in shots on goal in favor of the Boilermakers (3-8-1, 0-4-1 Big Ten) in the second half. RU held a 10-4 edge in corner kicks.
Sophomore forward Gracie Dunaway led the team with five shots and two shots on goal while fifth-year midfielder Sydney Duarte and junior forward Zoie Allen both came off the bench and notched two shots. In goal, freshman Kailey Kimball made a career-best eight saves. It is the fourth consecutive game that Kimball bested her previous career high in saves.
Rutgers took a 1-0 lead at 4:21, as Sam Kroeger scored from Kylie Daigle. Dunaway's first chance on goal came just 35 seconds later, and the Purdue defense then forced two off-target chances by the visitors.
Emily Mason extended the RU lead to 2-0 at 11:18, assisted by Daigle. Kimball made her first save less than 40 seconds later, and the Boilermaker defense followed with several blocked shots. Kimball's second save was in the 25th minute, and she added two more in the 27th and 28th.
From the top of the 18-yard box, Duarte sent a chance wide in the 30th minute. Dunaway then had a good opportunity that was saved four minutes later.
The Scarlet Knights made it 3-0 at 35:35, as Mason found her second of the day, from Becci Fluchel. Kimball saved the initial chance before Mason put in the rebound.
Four more saves by Kimball closed out the first half.
RU registered a 20-3 advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes, with a 10-1 edge in shots on goal. The visiting side earned four corner kicks to Purdue's one.
The second half opened with a nice opportunity by Duarte, though it went wide, and Dunaway followed in the 56th minute with a chance that was saved. Dunaway had another off-target shot in the 64th.
Kimball made her lone save of the half in the 69th after a nice defensive effort by freshman defender Olivia Hall. Instead of a 1-on-1 opportunity, Hall chased down the RU defender to force a tight-angle shot for Kimball to save.
An Allen opportunity was blocked in the 79th minute, and, seconds later, Dunaway sent her shot wide. Three more Rutgers chances followed, one blocked and two wide.
In the closing minute, senior forward Gabby Hollar had a good chance that was saved, as did Allen.
Up next, the Boilermakers' three-game homestand concludes against Illinois on Sunday, October 9, at 1 p.m. ET. It is Senior Day, as Purdue's seven seniors will be recognized on the field prior to kickoff. Admission is free for all fans to every regular-season home game at Folk Field in 2022.
