BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Golden Boot Trophy is staying home with the Purdue soccer team for an eighth consecutive season after a 2-2 draw at Indiana on Sunday afternoon.
On a sun-soaked day at Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Indiana, Purdue remained unbeaten in its last eight games against Indiana. It's the second-longest streak in the all-time series, behind a 15-game stretch for the Boilermakers from 2000-2011. Purdue is 16-4-7 all-time in the series against its in-state rivals and 5-2-4 on the road.
Sophomore forward Gracie Dunaway scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season to give the Boilermakers a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute, before the Hoosiers got the next two, in the 36th and 38th minutes. Fifth year midfielder Sydney Duarte notched the equalizer in the 63rd minute, her second goal of the year.
Duarte's game-tying goal, and her first career three-point game, ensured that she won the Golden Boot Trophy in each of her five years as a Boilermaker. This year's graduating seniors also retained the rivalry trophy every year they donned the Old Gold and Black.
In an evenly-played match on Sunday, the Boilermakers (3-9-3, 0-5-3 Big Ten) had eight shots, four on goal, while the Hoosiers (2-6-7, 0-6-2 Big Ten) registered 18 shots, seven on target. Indiana had five corner kicks to Purdue's four, and the visitors held an 11-10 edge in fouls.
Duarte led the team with three shots and had a game-high-tying two shots on goal, as she also assisted on the opening goal. Junior midfielder Emily Mathews, whose corner kick set up both scores, had two shots and also earned an assist on the team's first goal. Freshman goalkeeper Kailey Kimball made five saves.
Kimball's first stop came in the ninth minute, as she made a nice save before Duarte registered her first shot, which was off target, one minute later. IU had the next four chances, two of them saved by Kimball, while one was blocked and another forced wide.
Freshman forward Kayla Budish set up Purdue's first goal with a shot that was deflected wide, which resulted in a corner kick and Dunaway's goal at 27:20.
Mathews' corner was sent on the ground to Duarte at the corner of the goal box. She then redirected the ball to the top of the 18-yard box to Dunaway, who fired a left-footed strike into the upper-left corner of the goal. With plenty of traffic between her and the goal, IU's goalkeeper could not attempt a save on the hard-struck ball.
That gave the Boilermakers a 1-0 lead, as Dunaway scored her seventh career goal and sixth of her sophomore campaign. Duarte's assist was her fourth in 2022 and the eighth of her career, while Mathews collected her team-best sixth assist of the season and 15th of her career.
IU had the next two chances, as the defense forced the first off target and blocked the second, before the home side got the equalizer at 35:19. Anna Bennett scored unassisted to make it 1-1.
Two minutes later, at 37:13, Indiana took the lead as Olivia Smith scored to make it 2-1.
Kimball followed with a 41st-minute save, and a Hoosier blocked shot was the last chance for either team in the first half.
Indiana held an 11-3 advantage in shots and a 6-1 edge in shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes. A total of seven corner kicks were taken in the first half, four for IU and three for Purdue.
The Boilermakers opened the second half with a shot high by Mathews 55 seconds in, and she added another shot in the 53rd minute. Freshman forward Naomi Splittorff had a chance saved minutes later, as Purdue had the first three opportunities out of the break.
Duarte tied the game at 2-2 at 62:58. The play again began with a corner kick, as Mathews sent a high ball into the penalty box. Sophomore midfielder Abigail Roy and the IU keeper leaped for the ball, with Roy winning the header. She directed the ball towards the goal line, but an Indiana defender was there to clear it off the line. The defender's attempt to clear the ball only went three feet, right to Duarte who taped it in.
The goal is Duarte's seventh in her career and second this season. The fifth-year Boilermaker has eight points in 2022, a career high, and 22 career points.
Duarte had a chance to give Purdue the lead less than two minutes later, but her chance was saved.
While both teams looked for the go-ahead goal in the final 25 minutes, Indiana had the final six shots. The first five were forced off target before a last-second opportunity was saved by Kimball with less than 10 seconds remaining.
The home side held a 7-5 edge in shots in the second half, though the visitors had a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams earned one corner kick.
The Boilermakers' roadtrip concludes at Minnesota on Thursday, October 20, at 7 p.m. ET in Minneapolis. Purdue then returns to Folk Field for the final time in 2022 on Sunday, October 23, against Maryland at 2 p.m. ET. Admission is free for all fans to the contest.
