STILLWATER, Okla. – The Purdue cross country team earned a pair of 13th-place team finishes at the Weis-Crockett Invitational on Saturday morning in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Sophomore Nathan Walker led the men and senior Emma Tate was the team's top women's finisher as the Boilermakers raced against a strong national field at Oklahoma State's Greiner Family OSU Cross Country Course.
The Purdue men were 13th with 366 points and the women were 13th with 350 points. Montana State was first among the men and Cal Baptist was first in the women's team competition.
Along with host-Oklahoma State, the 26-team field featured top-25 teams Arkansas, Cal Baptist and Montana State, in addition to Big Ten foes Iowa and Nebraska. The pre-nationals meet was held at the site of the 2022 NCAA Cross Country Championships, set for next month.
Walker placed 40th overall with an 8k time of 24:26.9, as he moved up four places in the final 3,000 meters. Sophomore Brady Yoder was 72nd in 24:48.7, thanks to an improvement of eight spots in the final kilometer, and junior Caleb Williams finished 86th in 24:57.7. Junior Joey Kasch was right behind Williams in 87th with a time of 24:58.1, and senior Andrew Brandt notched a time of 25:07.0 to finish 99th.
Senior Bryce Hutchinson finished 119th overall in 25:20.0, just ahead of junior Geno Christofanelli, who was 120th in 25:20.2. Junior Alex Frey rounded out Purdue's finishers with a time of 25:45.4 to finish 167th.
Tate led the women with a time of 21:47.2 to finish 49th overall on the 6k course. She was two places ahead of sophomore Emma Squires, who was 51st in 21:48.7. Junior Payne Turney finished 62nd overall in 21:59.0, as she rose 16 places in the second half of the race.
Sophomore Lauren Bales was 104th in 22:25.4, and junior Caroline Jordan was 11th in 22:29.7, as she climbed 12 places in the final 3,000 meters. Freshman Katherine Rumsey finished 145th overall in 22:57.0, just ahead of senior Ellie Tate, who was 152nd in 23:02.3. Freshman Sarah Maggio finished 154th in 23:04.4.
The final meet of the regular season is up next, as Purdue returns to competition next weekend at the Illini Open in Champaign, Illinois, on October 21. Two weeks from now, the postseason begins at the Big Ten Cross Country Championships in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on October 28.
