EVANSTON, Ill. – The Purdue soccer team opened Big Ten Conference play with a 3-0 loss at No. 18 Northwestern on Sunday afternoon in Evanston, Illinois.

EVANSTON, Ill. – The Purdue soccer team opened Big Ten Conference play with a 3-0 loss at No. 18 Northwestern on Sunday afternoon in Evanston, Illinois.
 
On a hot, sun-soaked day at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium, the Boilermakers (3-5-0, 0-1-0 Big Ten) fell behind 1-0 in the fifth minute, and the Wildcats (7-1-1, 1-0-0) scored again in the 20th minute. NU's third goal came in the 29th minute.
 
Purdue falls to 1-2-0 against top-25 opponents in 2022 after playing its second consecutive top-18 foe. The Boilermakers opened the Big Ten season on the road for the third consecutive season.
 
The Wildcats had a 12-7 advantage in shots, though it was 6-4 in Purdue's favor in the second half. NU had a 3-0 edge in shots on target in the contest and earned five corner kicks to the Boilermakers' three, a total that was even at 2-2 in the second half.
 
Individually, junior midfielder Emily Mathews had two shots to lead the team, and five players registered one shot.
 
Northwestern took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Ella Hase at 4:36. Lily Gilbertson had the assist. The Wildcats made it 2-0 at 19:36, as Meg Boade scored from Danika Austin, and NU extended its advantage to 3-0 thanks to Josie Aulicino at 28:58. That was assisted by Aurea del Carmen and Boade.
 
Senior midfielder Chloe Woodbeck came in off the bench and had Purdue's lone shot in the first half, a chance that was blocked in the 40th minute.
 
The Boilermakers were out-shot 8-1 in the opening half, and the Wildcats had three shots on target. NU had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
 
Purdue came out stronger in the second half, with four shots in the opening 16 minutes. Sophomore midfielder Abigail Roy had the first chance, which was blocked in the 50th minute, and Mathews sent one off target in the 53rd. Three minutes later, freshman forward Kayla Budish had a shot wide, and Mathews had another opportunity go wide in the 62nd.
 
The defense then registered a blocked shot in the 69th minute, and forced two shots wide in six minutes later. Sophomore midfielder Gracie Dunaway followed with a shot of her own that went off target.
 
The Boilermakers had a good opportunity in the 84th minute, as they forced a corner kick. On the ball in towards the far post, a header by freshman defender Riley Knudsen was blocked just off the goal line.
 
Purdue out-shot Northwestern 6-4 in the second half, though neither team had a ball go on target. Both sides had two corner kicks in the closing 45 minutes.
 
Up next, Purdue returns home to host Wisconsin in a nationally-televised contest on ESPNU on Thursday, September 22, at 5 p.m. ET. It is $2 beer night, and admission is free for all fans to every regular-season home game at Folk Field in 2022.
