WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A goal and an assist by sophomore forward Gracie Dunaway helped propel the Purdue soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Miami (Ohio) on Sunday afternoon at Folk Field.
Dunaway scored her third goal of the season for the Boilermakers (2-2-0) in the 26th minute and assisted on the game-winning goal in the 53rd, as freshman defender Riley Knudsen headed it in for her first collegiate goal. The Redhawks (1-2-1) netted their lone goal in the 66th minute.
In four games, Dunaway has a team-best three goals and a team-high-tying two assists. She has accounted for five of Purdue's six goals and has at least one point in three of the season's four matches.
The Boilermakers had 16 shots, seven on goal, while Miami (Ohio) registered 12 shots with just one on target. Dunaway posted a game-high five shots and four shots on goal and freshman forward Kayla Budish notched four shots, one on target. Starting in goal, freshman Kailey Kimball made her first career appearance and earned the win.
As the Boilermaker defense limited the visitors to just one shot on goal, Miami's keeper made five saves of her own to hold Purdue to two goals.
Dunaway nearly found the back of the net with two chances in the 10th and 11th minutes, but both times the Redhawk keeper came off her line to make the save. Four minutes later, Budish hit the near post on a shot from the left side.
After a Miami shot went wide in the 23rd minute, Dunaway found the game's first goal at 25:15. Junior midfielder Emily Mathews had the assist.
Off a ball in from across midfield, Mathews found Dunaway on the run on the left side. Dunaway got to the ball just on the outside of the 18-yard box, dribbled once and picked it up again at the corner of the six. With the keeper off her line, Dunaway slid it past her towards the far post. It found the back of the net just ahead of a sprinting Budish.
That put Purdue ahead 1-0, and Dunaway had another shot saved in the 30th minute.
The Redhawks closed the half with several chances in the final seven minutes, with one shot blocked and three that were off target.
In the opening 45 minutes, Miami (Ohio) out-shot Purdue 7-6, though the home side had a 4-0 advantage in shots on goal.
The Boilermakers added to their lead early in the second half, as Knudsen made it 2-0 at 52:42. Off a corner kick by Dunaway to the far post, Knudsen headed the ball in from the corner of the six-yard box into the near side of the goal.
A Miami shot hit the crossbar in the 54th minute, and junior forward Zoie Allen had a chance saved in the 62nd before the visitors found the back of the net at 65:11. Norah Roush scored from close range on a ball in from Caroline Palmer.
That proved to be the final shot on goal for either team, though both sides had chances that were off target in the remaining 25 minutes of action.
Purdue held a 10-5 advantage in shots in the second half, with a 3-1 edge in shots on goal.
