Comeback Falls Short at Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Purdue soccer team lost a 2-1 contest at Kentucky on Thursday evening at the Bell Soccer Complex in Lexington, Kentucky.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Purdue soccer team lost a 2-1 contest at Kentucky on Thursday evening at the Bell Soccer Complex in Lexington, Kentucky.
 
The Boilermakers (1-2-0) fell behind 2-0 after 14 minutes, but answered with a goal by fifth-year senior Sydney Duarte less than two minutes later to make it a 2-1 game. However, the visitors could not find the tying goal.
 
The Wildcats (3-0-0) held a 19-8 advantage in shots and an 8-2 edge in shots on goal. UK had seven corner kicks to Purdue's five.
 
Freshman forward Kayla Budish led the Boilermakers with three shots and joined Duarte with a shot on goal. Junior midfielder Emily Mathews added two shots. In goal, sophomore goalkeeper Sara Kile made five saves and the Boilermaker defense cleared another ball off the line.
 
Thursday marked Purdue's first road game of the season. The team has suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time since the 2020 campaign.
 
Kentucky took a 1-0 lead at 2:42 on a goal by Hailey Farrington-Bentil. Hannah Richardson had the assist.
 
Less than two minutes later, Budish had a shot blocked, and UK had the next five attempts before the sixth found the back of the net to make it 2-0 at 13:45. Prior to the second goal, The Boilermakers blocked one shot, forced two high, the defense cleared one and Kile made one save. However, Kentucky extended its lead to 2-0 on a goal by Jordyn Rhodes, assisted by Richardson.
 
Less than two minutes later, at 15:14, Purdue scored to cut the deficit in half. Off a corner kick by sophomore forward Gracie Dunaway, Duarte scored her first of the season. Dunaway's ball into the box found Duarte, who headed it off the crossbar and in.
 
Dunaway's assist is her first in 2022, and she continues to lead the team with five points.
 
The set-piece goal made it 2-1, and Purdue followed with two shots in the next six-plus minutes, one by Budish that was high and another by Mathews that went wide. Kentucky had the final three shots of the half, two that were blocked and another that went over.
 
The Boilermakers had five shots in the opening 45 minutes to the Wildcats' nine. UK had a 3-1 advantage in shots on target.
 
Kentucky had several chances to extend its lead in the first 20 minutes of the second half. However, four shots were forced off target by the defense, two were saved by Kile and another was blocked.
 
Junior midfielder Hannah Lapeire had a shot that went wide in the 76th minute, and Kile followed with two saves, her final two of the match.
 
Purdue had a strong push in the last 10 minutes, with several chances in the final third, but couldn't get a goal. Three corner kicks helped the effort, as junior midfielder Abigail Roy added a shot wide and Budish had a chance that was saved.
 
After intermission, Purdue was out-shot 10-3 and UK had a 4-1 edge in shots on goal. The Boilermakers had four corner kicks to Kentucky's three, with three of those opportunities in the final 10 minutes.
 
Up next, the Boilermakers return home to host Miami (Ohio) on Sunday, August 28, at 1 p.m. ET. Admission is free for all fans to every regular-season home game at Folk Field in 2022. Sunday is the annual Pooches at the Pitch game, where fans are invited to bring their four-legged friends to Folk Field. The first 150 fans with dogs will receive a Purdue dog leash.
