4 Events Open NCAAs, 6 Boilermakers Honored

EUGENE, Ore. – The Purdue track & field team began the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships with four events and six Honorable Mention All-America accolades on Wednesday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

EUGENE, Ore. – The Purdue track & field team began the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships with four events and six Honorable Mention All-America accolades on Wednesday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
 
Senior Kelly Cook was 18th in the hammer throw, sophomore Safin Wills placed 20th in the long jump and the men's 4x100 relay finished 21st overall. Meanwhile, junior Isaiah Martin is in 14th place through five events in the decathlon.
 
In the decathlon at his third NCAA Outdoor Championships in three seasons, Martin amassed 3,981 points in the first five events to sit in 14th place overall. He is 39 points behind the 13th-place competitor and 153 outside of the top eight with five events remaining on Thursday.
 
Martin opened the meet in the 100 meters, where he was 16th in 11.15 seconds. He followed it up with a wind-legal season-best long jump mark of 7.09 meters to finish 12th. The third event was the shot put, where Martin posted the third-best mark of his career and second-best in 2022 with a 13.44m to place 12th. In the high jump he was 14th with a clearance of 1.92m, his second-best this year. The day concluded with the 400m and Martin was 11th in a season-best 49.37.
 
Cook Jr. earned the first All-America honor of the weekend for Purdue in the hammer throw. At his second NCAA Championships and first as a Boilermaker, he was 18th with a throw of 66.64m. The third-furthest throw of his career came on his final attempt. Cook Jr. earned Honorable Mention All-America distinction for the second time in his career, and the 18th-place showing is his best NCAA finish.
 
The opening event on the track was the 4x100 relay semifinal, and Purdue finished 21st overall in 39.65. Seniors Amir Harris and Antonio Mitchell II, junior Justin Becker and freshman Tyneilus Morrow collected Honorable Mention All-America accolades as Harris, Mitchell II and Morrow are recognized for the first time at their inaugural NCAA meet and Becker is honored on an All-America team for the third time.
 
Wills qualified for the NCAA Championships in two events, the long jump and triple, jump, and opened competition in the long jump on Wednesday. He finished 20th overall with a jump of 7.35m on his third and final attempt. At his second national championships in as many years and his first as a Boilermaker, Wills was bestowed with Honorable Mention All-America honors on Wednesday and will look to add to it on Friday in the triple jump.
 
Fifteen Boilermakers are competing in nine events at the four-day national championships. The meet continues on Thursday with three women's events and the conclusion of the decathlon. Action for Purdue on Thursday is set for 2:30 p.m. – 12 a.m. ET / 11:30 a.m. – 9 p.m. PT. On Friday, June 10, the team's events are from 9:20-10:20 p.m. ET / 6:20-7:20 p.m. PT, while the weekend wraps up on Saturday, June 11, from 5:05-8 p.m. ET / 2:05-5 p.m. PT.

The men qualified in five events, their most since 2019, and the women have four entries, their most since 2018. The team's nine total entries are Purdue's most since 2018.
