EUGENE, Ore. – Junior Isaiah Martin earned his fifth career All-America honor as the Purdue track & field team continued competition at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Martin finished ninth in the decathlon with 7,708 points to post his best NCAA Championship finish and collect Second Team All-America accolades. Also on Thursday, the second day of the four-day national championships, four Boilermakers earned five total Honorable Mention All-America accolades.
Through the first five events, contested on Wednesday, Martin was in 14th place overall in the decathlon. His Thursday got off to a big start with a wind-legal PR of 14.41 in the 110m hurdles. As he was seventh in the race, Martin moved up to 13th overall. He rose one more spot to 12th after the discus thanks to a throw of 39.94 meters that was 14th-best. The day's third event was the pole vault, and Martin was 17th with a clearance of 4.21m. That put him in 13th in the 10-event competition with two events remaining.
Martin saved two of his best performances for the last two events of his collegiate career. In the javelin, Martin notched a throw of 61.72m to finish first. The season-best mark and third-best throw of his career pushed Martin up four places to ninth overall. He concluded the decathlon with a personal-best 1,500m time of 4:28.80 to finish eighth.
With a final point total of 7,708, Martin tied his collegiate best, which is the school record he set a year ago. He finished ninth overall for his best NCAA finish and earned Second Team All-America honors for the fourth time in his career. The finish bests 10th-place showings in the decathlon in 2019 and 2021 and in the heptathlon in 2021, and Martin also qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in 2020 in the heptathlon.
Martin concludes his storied Boilermaker career as a five-time All-American and two-time school record-holder, in the heptathlon (5,631 points) and decathlon (7,708 points, twice). He finished in the top 10 nationally in all four NCAA Championships he competed in.
Thursday's action at Hayward Field concluded with the 4x400 relay, where Purdue finished 17th overall in 3:36.18. Sophomore K'Ja Talley, freshman Shianne Dacosta and sophomores Saran Kouyeth and Cierra Williams were just shy of a top-16 finish and were bestowed with Honorable Mention All-America distinction.
Eighty minutes earlier, Talley ran in the 400m hurdles and finished 18th overall in 58.71. As she became the first Boilermaker woman to run in and individual event at NCAAs since 2018, she earned the first of what would be two Honorable Mention All-America awards.
On Wednesday, senior Kelly Cook was 18th in the hammer throw, sophomore Safin Wills placed 20th in the long jump and the men's 4x100 relay finished 21st overall. All six Boilermakers collected Honorable Mention All-America distinction.
