GENEVA, Ohio - The Purdue wrestling team had three athletes advance to the second day of competition at the 2022 U23 Freestyle World Team Trials on Saturday, hosted at the SPIRE Academy on Saturday. The freshmen trio of Dustin Norris, Hayden Filipovich and Tristan Ruhlman will chase a spot on the podium Sunday, all still alive in the consolation brackets at their respective weights.
Norris posted a 2-1 record at 61 kg, opening with a 7-0 victory over Mason Bush of Bulls Wrestling Club, but falling in the Round of 32 to No. 4 seed Julian Chlebove of Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club. He bounced back in the second session, needing 2:03 to score the fall over Joshua Sarpy of the Arkansas RTC. Norris took a 2-0 lead early with a takedown, but the action really started with about a minute left in the first period as Sarpy got to a body lock and took Norris to his back for four points. However, Norris was able to counter the throw and put Sarpy on his back to secure the win and advance.
Filipovich was 1-1, earning a pair of wins at 92 kg. He lost his opening bout at the hands of Robert Striggow of Cliff Keen Wrestling Club, but countered with a 7-4 victory over Wyatt Miller of Boone RTC to advance to Sunday.
Ruhlman followed a similar route as Norris, winning his first, falling in his second and closing the day with a win. He topped Ryan Higgins from Williams College in the opening contest, rolling up a series of scores late to post an 11-0 tech fall. He fell to third-seeded Lucas Davison in the second round, but kept his bracket alive with a 12-5 victory over Ryan Catka of the Navy-Marine Corps Mat Club.
Six other Boilermakers wrapped up their tournament action Saturday, paced by Christian Navida and Macartney Parkinson, who each posted 2-2 records. Navida's wins came at 70 kg, scoring a 15-4 tech fall in his opener and posting a fall in the consolation brackets. Parkinson started off the day with a 10-0 win at 79 kg, and backed it up with an 8-7 victory on the back side.
