WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue volleyball team is poised for 10 non-conference matchups to open the 2022 season, which will begin August 26 in Knoxville, Tennessee. Overall, the schedule features four opponents recognized in last year's final poll, all of which advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament, and combine for five regular-season or conference tournament champion titles.
Purdue, coming off its second consecutive Regional Finals appearance and its highest finish in AVCA final poll history at No. 6, will travel to Knoxville, Tennessee (Aug. 26-27) and Louisville, Kentucky (Sept. 9-10) for a pair of road tournaments in addition to the two the Boilermakers will host: The Reamer Club Xtra Special (Sept. 2-3) and the Stacey Clark Classic (Sept. 15-16).
"We will be challenged on the road and at home," said Big Ten Coach of the Year Dave Shondell. "Our Boilermakers know the effort that must be exerted between now and August 26th to be prepared for the ten opponents on the non-league docket. The fall season will be here very soon."
First, Purdue will begin its season at Tennessee for the Tennessee Classic, where the Boilermakers will take on Bowling Green, Loyola Chicago and Tennessee. Then, Purdue will return home for the Reamer Club Xtra Special before hitting the road for the Louisville Invitational, where the Boilermakers will take on host Louisville and either Lipscomb or Xavier. Purdue will close out the non-conference play at home with the Stacey Clark Classic before Big Ten Conference action will begin, the schedule for which will be released at a later date.
The Reamer Club Xtra Special tournament will include squads from Bradley, No. 18 Utah and Milwaukee, meanwhile Purdue will host Northern Kentucky and Ball State in the Stacey Clark Classic.
"I am pleased with the results of much work and negotiations by our staff to create a non-conference slate - that along with the Big Ten schedule - will allow our team an opportunity to generate a productive RPI and an exciting experience for our players and fans," said head coach Dave Shondell. "Aside from recruiting and training our team, the non-conference pool has become the most critical measure of advancing to the NCAA tourney and the selection committee's seeding."
The Purdue volleyball squad is coming of a historic season, which saw five victories over top-5 ranked opponents and the second-most wins in the nation over teams ranked in the top-8. Additionally, the 2021 journey led to a program-record six honorees in the Big Ten postseason awards, a 34-year-old program-record broken (block assists), its highest ranking in program history and a fourth-place finish in the Big Ten standings.
