DADE CITY, Fla. – Benjamin Cai, an incoming Purdue freshman, has advanced to the final qualifying round for the 122nd United States Open Championship after advancing out of local qualifying on Wednesday at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club.
Cai (pronounced Sigh) earned one of five advancing spots out of 84 players after shooting a 6-under par 66 to earn one of the five qualifying spots from the site. Cai recorded six birdies, 12 pars and no bogeys on his round to finish fourth, two shots ahead of fifth for the final qualifying spot.
Cai was among a field of strong players that included Chase Koepka (fifth), current PGA Tour Canada member Wei-Hsuan Wang and former Florida State first-team All-American Jack Maguire.
The 122nd U.S. Open will take place at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, from June 16 to 19. Cai, along with other Purdue alums, is looking to become the fourth former Boilermaker in recent memory to compete in the U.S. Open (Tyler Duncan 2015, 2018, 2020; Shiv Kapur 2014, 2015; Fernando Barco 2021).
Cai has had success this spring, also finishing third at the American Junior Golf Association's Sung Hyun Park Junior Championship in April. He is part of a strong incoming class for head coach Rob Bradley that features Cai, Wit Pitipat and Justin Sun.
