LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Purdue freshman Matt Ramos advanced to the finals of the U.S. Open senior division at 57 kg to lead a Boilermaker effort at the South Point Hotel and Casino on Friday. The 2018 Cadet World Champion went 3-0 on the day, becoming the second U.S. Open finalist in the tenure of head coach Tony Ersland.
Ramos opened his day with back-to-back technical falls over Timothy Romero and Dalton Henderson. Ramos built a 6-0 lead on Romero with two takedowns and a leg lace, and followed it up with a four-point move early in the second to finish him off, 10-0. Henderson drew first blood vs. Ramos with a takedown, but Ramos responded with a takedown of his own and then hit five straight leg laces to seal the 12-2 tech.
The semifinal match vs. North Carolina State's Jakob Camacho as drama filled as the final score was reviewed three times before awarding Ramos the win. The two traded passivity points over the first few minutes and Camacho took a 2-1 midway through the second with a pushout. Ramos retook the lead with a chest wrap to make it 3-2, and then held on to the lead via criteria after a step-out point given to Camacho. The controversy surrounding the match came via a caution +1 call on the step-out, which was awarded, confirmed and then overturned after a lengthy review by the officials.
Ramos advances to face high school teammate and close friend Anthony Moulton of Campbell University and the Buies Creek Wrestling Club. Both graduated from Lockport High School in Illinois.
Ramos is one of four Purdue wrestlers still alive in competition in Saturday's tournament sessions, joined by freshmen Stoney Buell (74 kg), Hayden Filipovich (92 kg) and Hayden Copass (125 kg). All three Boilermaker rookies rolled to the U20 quarterfinals at their respective weights before being pushed to the consolation bracket and tomorrow's round of 12. A win for any of the three tomorrow morning results in a placing spot for the tournament, and the top-seven finishers earn a spot in the U20 World Team Trials in June in Ohio.
Fellow freshman Ben Vanadia advanced to the Round of 16 as well at 86 kg, but was injured in a loss and defaulted from the tournament. Purdue freshmen Dustin Norris and Jaden Reynolds also bowed out of the tournament Friday as Norris was 2-2 in the senior division at 61 kg, while Reynolds strung together three consolation wins after a first round loss, but fell short of the blood round in the U20 70 kg bracket.
Tomorrow's action starts at 10 a.m. PST with the Round of 12, while Ramos will compete in the finals at 6 p.m., live on FloWrestling.
