DETROIT, Mich. - The Purdue wrestling team will have two shots at All-America honors Friday evening as freshman Matt Ramos and senior Max Lyon advanced to the Round of 12 at the 2022 NCAA Championships. The Boilermakers have 10.5 team points heading into the fourth session, with wins in tonight's matches worth 3.5 points apiece and a guaranteed spot on the podium.
Both Ramos and Lyon had to win a pair of matches over higher-seeded opponents to remain alive in their respective brackets, taking care of business to advance to Session 4. The No. 26 seed at 133 pounds, Ramos started his day against a familiar foe in eighth-seeded Rayvon Foley of Michigan State, having already fallen to the Spartan twice this season. Ramos wasted no time taking control of the match, scoring off the whistle and then adding two more off of Foley's shot to take a 4-1 lead. He added four more with a blast double to Foley's back to finish the period with an 8-1 advantage. Foley cut into the lead with an escape and two takedowns, but Ramos held on to his lead to advance.
In his second bout of the session, Ramos used a series of flashy moves to take a 4-1 decision over No. 15 seed Kai Orine of North Carolina State. The Boilermaker freshman tried to hit a Jonesy in the first period, setting for a stalemate, but funked his way to a score in closing seconds of the second period with another Jonesy attempted that resulted in a scramble and a 2-1 lead after two. In the third period, Orine tried a cement mixer late, but Ramos held it off and scored a second takedown for the win.
Ramos will face No. 4 seed Korbin Myers of Virginia Tech in tonight's blood round, with the winner guaranteeing himself at least eighth place on the podium.
Lyon started his day against No. 13 seed Kyle Cochran of Maryland, taking the Terrapin to sudden victory before finishing off a 6-4 win. Lyon got to a single-leg attack quickly in the first and built a 2-1 lead before Cochran evened the count at 2-2 with a second-period escape. Lyon bumped his lead to 3-2 early in the third, but Cochran evened the score at 4-4 as he countered a shot from Lyon for two. Lyon was back on the attack in the extra period and quickly got to the leg and scored to move to the third consolation round.
Lyon beat up on No. 27 seed Keegan Moore of Oklahoma in his next match, scoring four takedowns on his way to the 11-6 win. Moore's only offense in the match came on a first-period reversal, but Lyon stayed in control the whole way with a series of leg attacks and finishes as he picked up his fourth win of the tournament and 16th of the season.
Lyon will face No. 7 seed Kaleb Romero of Ohio State in tonight's blood round, who fell in the quarterfinals to Penn State's Aaron Brooks after winning his first two matches.
The national tournament came to a close Friday for junior Thomas Penola, senior Parker Filius and sophomore Gerrit Nijenhuis. Penola won his first match of the day, turning in a 10-8 sudden victory over No. 12 seed Tanner Sloan of South Dakota State. After surrendering four first-period points to Sloan on a takedown and turn, Penola slowly tracked him down, scoring two takedowns in the second period and two more in the third to even the score at 8-8 after regulation. Penola stayed on the offensive in overtime, digging in an underhook, throwing it by and finishing on the edge for two. The officials originally waved off the points, but after reviewing the call gave Penola the points and the win.
Penola was edged out in his second match of the day, falling 5-3 to Rutgers' No. 14 seed Greg Bulsak. Penola was on the offensive the entire match, but Bulsak narrowly escaped each time and counted twice for takedowns.
Filius fell in his first match of the day, suffering a narrow 8-7 decision at the hands of No. 14 seed Dresden Simon of Central Michigan. Filius scored in the first and third periods, but ran out of time to finish his tournament. Nijenhuis dropped a 4-1 decision to Ohio State's seventh-seeded Ethan Smith, surrendering a third-period takedown in a closely-contested match to bow out at 174 pounds.
Friday night's action begins at 8 p.m. ET and will have live coverage via ESPN and ESPN3. The round consists of a pair of consolation rounds and the championship semifinals.
