WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The NCAA unveiled the full seeds and brackets for the 2022 wrestling championships Wednesday, revealing the national seeds and first-round opponents for the seven Purdue qualifiers in Detroit. The Boilermakers have a pair of top-15 seeds in senior Devin Schroder and junior Thomas Penola, marking the third straight top-10 seed for Schroder and the highest career seed for Penola.
At 19-4 overall and the No. 9 seed at 125 pounds, Schroder becomes just the third wrestler in program history to earn a top-10 national seed three times, joining Bob Marshall (1960-62), Ryan Lange (2002-04) and Chris Fleeger (2002-03, 2006). Schroder is scheduled to face No. 24 seed Sam Latona of Virginia Tech in the opening round. A 2021 All-American, Latona is 12-7 on the year and finished second at the ACC Championships. It will be the first-ever meeting between Schroder and Latona.
Penola posted a 22-7 in his second season at 197 pounds, earning the No. 11 seed in the national field. Coming off a fifth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships, he'll face North Dakota State's No. 22 seed Owen Pentz. Pentz finished 17-7 on the year and placed sixth at the Big 12 Championships. Penola and Pentz have never crossed paths before.
Junior Kendall Coleman was named the No. 19 seed at 157 pounds after posting a 14-8 record and finishing sixth at the Big Ten Championships this past weekend. Coleman draws No. 14 seed Jake Keating of Virginia in the opening round, who posted a 15-5 record this season and took third at the ACC Championships. While Coleman has never faced Keating, sophomore teammate Cooper Noehre wrested the Cavalier at this year's Matmen Open, suffering an 11-4 loss in the Round of 12.
Senior Parker Filius advances to his third straight national tournament at 141 pounds, earning the No. 20 seed after posting a 21-11 record on the season. Filius took eighth at the Big Ten Championships earning wins over former All-Americans Stevan Micic of Michigan and Chad Red of Nebraska. Filius will face No. 13 seed Ian Parker of Iowa State, who posted a 12-3 record this year and despite earning the top seed at the Big 12 Championships, finished fifth. Filius and Parker did not meet in the dual between the Boilermakers and Cyclones in December as Parker didn't weigh in for the event.
The No. 25 seed at 174 pounds, sophomore Gerrit Nijenhuis posted a 17-12 record on the year and just missed the podium at the Big Ten Championships. He'll face a familiar opponent in No. 8 seed Michael O'Malley of Drexel, who posted a 22-2 record this season and won the EIWA Championship title. Nijenhuis and O'Malley met in the first match of the season with O'Malley earning a win by fall.
Freshman Matt Ramos earned the No. 26 seed at 133 pounds after a seventh-place showing at the Big Ten Championships and an 18-8 record on the year. Ramos is the second Purdue freshman in as many years to qualify for nationals at 133 pounds, aiming to become the first Boilermaker rookie to earn All-America honors since Cashé Quiroga in 2010. Ramos will match up with No. 7 seed Lucas Byrd of Illinois who finished 21-3 this season and placed fourth at the Big Ten Championships. Byrd topped Ramos 5-0 in the dual between Purdue and Illinois on Jan. 21.
Senior Max Lyon was named the No. 30 seed at 184 pounds, earning an at-large bid after a 12-13 regular season. A four-time national qualifier at the weight, Lyon will face third-seeded Trent Hidlay of North Carolina State, who heads to Detroit at 17-0 and fresh off an ACC Championship. Lyon and Hidlay have never faced each other on the mat.
The Boilermakers take at least seven wrestlers to the national tournament for the fifth straight season under head coach Tony Ersland, the longest streak of its kind in Purdue history. The action is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. ET on Thursday at Little Caesar's Arena.
