LINCOLN, Neb. - Senior Devin Schroder led the Purdue wrestling team's Session I-efforts Saturday, advancing to the semifinals at 125 pounds and securing an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. The Boilermakers earned 13.5 points in the session and sit in 11th place in the team standings.

The No. 5 seed at 125 pounds, Schroder opened his day with a 2-0 decision over Indiana's Jacob Moran, using an escape and a riding time point to earn his 18th win of the season and 12th shutout of the season. Schroder followed up with a 3-1 decision over fourth-seeded Malik Heinselman of Ohio State in the quarterfinals, scoring the only takedown of the match and finishing on top to advance to the semifinals for the third straight season.

The Boilermakers got first-round wins from freshman Matt Ramos, senior Parker Filius and juniors Kendall Coleman and Thomas Penola. The No. 9 seed at 133 pounds, Ramos used a four-point move in the first period to earn a 7-5 decision over eighth-seeded Joe Olivieri of Rutgers before falling in the quarterfinals to top-seeded Roman Bravo-Young of Penn State.

Filius had the biggest upset of the opening session as the 11th-seeded Boilermaker topped No. 6 seed Stevan Micic of Michigan at 141 pounds. After surrendering two first-period takedowns, Filius rallied with a reversal in the second and a takedown of his own in the third, tacking on a stalling point and riding time in the 7-4 decision. He fell in the quarters to No. 3 seed Sebastian Rivera of Rutgers.

Coleman defended his No. 4 seed at 157 pounds in his opener, posting a 20-10 major decision over No. 13 seed Lucas Cordio of Maryland. The Boilermaker fell in his second match of the day, getting edged out by No. 5 seed Peyton Robb of Nebraska in sudden victory. Penola blanked 11th-seeded Jaron Smith of Maryland 5-0 at 197 pounds, moving on to the quarterfinals for a rematch with Michigan State's No. 3 seed Cameron Caffey. Caffey scored an early takedown and rode it out for a 4-2 win over the sixth-seeded Purdue junior.

All four Boilermakers are still alive in the consolation bracket, and will wrestle tonight for spots on the podium, along with seventh-seeded Hayden Lohrey and Gerrit Nijenhuis at 165 and 174 pounds, respectively. Lohrey fell to No. 10 seed Creighton Edsell of Penn State in sudden victory in his opener, and Nijenhuis surrendered a takedown at the buzzer to No. 9 seed Dominic Solis of Maryland.

Tonight's second session will begin at 5:30 p.m. CT with multiple rounds of consolation matches before the championship semifinals begin at 7:30 p.m. All action will continue to be available via the Big Ten Network and B1G+.
