The No. 18 Purdue wrestling team snapped a 12-dual win series streak for the visiting University of Minnesota on Sunday

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 18 Purdue wrestling team snapped a 12-dual win series streak for the visiting University of Minnesota on Sunday, posting an 18-14 senior day victory over the Golden Gophers. The Boilermakers earned wins at six of the 10 weights, including ranked upsets at four spots to improve to 10-4 overall and 4-3 in conference duals.

Purdue last beat Minnesota in 2004, last earning an 18-15 win over the 11th-ranked Golden Gophers on Feb. 1, 2004, in which the Boilermakers were coincidentally ranked No. 18 in the country as well. The victory is Purdue's second ranked win of the season, following an 18-15 result at No. 9 Nebraska on Jan. 7, and the Boilermakers have now won three of their last four heading into the final dual of the season.

The dual started in Minnesota's favor Sunday as fourth-ranked Brayton Lee edged out No. 9 Purdue junior Kendall Coleman at 157 pounds, 2-1. The two wrestlers traded escapes to start the second and third periods and Lee was given a penalty point for stalling in the second period to account for the final difference.

The Boilermakers answered at 165 pounds as sophomore Hayden Lohrey beat a ranked opponent for the second time in his last four duals, taking out No. 26 Cael Carlson 3-2. Lohrey hit a really solid double-leg in the opening period to take an early lead, and the freshman Gopher could never recover. Lohrey nearly had another two at the end of the second period, which was given and then taken away by the officials. Lohrey added an escape at the start of the third period, and was one second from a fourth point as he finished with 59 seconds of riding time.

Minnesota won another ranked matchup at 174 pounds to retake the lead, but senior Max Lyon and junior Thomas Penola put together back-to-back wins over ranked Gophers to give Purdue a 9-6 edge at the intermission. Lyon rallied from behind to defeat No. 22 Isaiah Salazar at 184 pounds, 4-3, dealing the Minnesota sophomore just his third loss of the season and snap a four-match win streak in conference duals. Salazar got in front early with a first period takedown, but Lyon escaped and then responded with a takedown of his own to close out the second period. Lyon's third-period escape proved the decisive point as he held position over the final two minutes to earn the win. Penola followed up with another dominant display at 197 pounds, scoring takedowns in all three periods on his way to an 8-2 decision over No. 31 Michial Foy. Penola's third and final takedown of the match drew a loud crowd response and he finished the match on top to improve to 17-5 overall and win his fourth straight Big Ten dual.

The Golden Gophers took an 11-9 lead after the break on the strength of a technical-fall win from top-ranked Gable Steveson, but the tide swung back hard in the Boilermakers' favor as they returned to the top of the lineup. Senior Devin Schroder opened the run with a win over No. 9 Patrick McKee at 125 pounds, cruising to an 8-3 victory. Schroder opened with a takedown and two-point turn in the first period for a 4-0 lead, and despite McKee cutting into his lead with a reversal and rideout in the second, Schroder rallied with a reversal of his own in the third and then finished the match with a takedown to secure his 16th win of the season and 93rd of his career.

Freshman Matt Ramos backed up Schroder with a 3-2 decision at 133 pounds, taking out No. 27 Jake Gliva. Ramos put two on the board early and then wrestled through a series of crazy scrambles to hang on for the decision, his 14th win of the season and fourth in conference duals. Senior Parker Filius capped the run and sealed the dual at 141 pounds, posting a 9-3 decision over Marcos Polanco. Filius got out in front early, scoring twice in the first period to open up a 4-1 lead, and then added three more points with an escape and takedown in the second. Polanco snared a takedown in the third, but Filius escaped quickly and tacked on a riding time point to finish the win.

The Boilermakers are off next weekend, and will finish up the 2021-22 dual slate Saturday, Feb. 19, at Northwestern. The dual is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. ET start and will air live on the Big Ten Network.
