WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Big Ten Conference unveiled its pre-seeds for the 2022 wrestling championships Monday, revealing the projected seeds for the 10 Purdue entries and their first-round opponents. Five Boilermakers earned top-eight seeds, while six earned spots inside the NCAA qualifying number at their respective weights.

Redshirt junior Kendall Coleman earned the top seed for the Boilermakers, securing the No. 4 spot at 157 pounds. It marks the third straight year he's been a top-four seed at the conference tournament, where he placed second in 2020 and fifth in 2022. Coleman is projected to face No. 13 seed Lucas Cordio of Maryland in the first round.

Two-time Big Ten Championship runner-up Devin Schroder was named the No. 5 seed at 125 pounds after a 17-3 regular season and 6-2 mark in conference duals. Schroder advanced to the championship match as the No. 2 seed in 2020 and as the No. 7 seed in 2021. He is scheduled to draw No. 12 seed Jacob Moran of Indiana in the opening round.

Junior Thomas Penola secured the No. 6 seed at 197 pounds, earning the spot for the second straight season in what is a loaded field at the weight. Penola has placed in the top-seven in each of his first two seasons, taking seventh at heavyweight as a freshman and placing seventh at 197 in 2021. He is scheduled to face Maryland's 11th-seeded Jaron Smith in the first round.

Sophomores Hayden Lohrey and Gerrit Nijenhuis were named the No. 7 seed at 165 and 174 pounds, respectively. Lohrey will compete in his first career conference tournament, matching up with 10th-seeded Creighton Edsell of Penn State in the opening round, while Nijenhuis was fifth at 165 pounds last season as the No. 9 seed, and will face No. 10 seed D.J. Shannon of Illinois out of the gate.

Freshman Matt Ramos was named the No. 9 seed at 133 pounds, putting him inside the 10 allocated bids for the NCAA Championships at the weight. He will face another first-time conference-tournament competitor in his opening match, drawing Rutgers freshman Joe Olivieri in the first round.

Final seeds will be announced Friday after the final championship seeding meeting with the Big Ten coaches. This is when teams will submit their final entries for the tournament and any seedings that are within three votes of each other can be discussed and voted on by the coaches.

The Big Ten Championships are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday, March 5, at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska. For the second straight season all sessions will air live on the Big Ten Network, with additional streams available on B1G+.
