Wrestling Falls at Northwestern 20-15

The 15th-ranked Purdue wrestling team concluded its regular season with a 20-15 loss at No. 23 Northwestern on Saturday.

EVANSTON, Ill. - The 15th-ranked Purdue wrestling team concluded its regular season with a 20-15 loss at No. 23 Northwestern on Saturday, splitting the matches with five wins, but surrendering bonus points at two weights to decide the dual. The Boilermakers finish the Big Ten schedule at 10-5 overall and 4-4 in conference contests.

Purdue's five wins came at 125, 133, 165, 184 and 197 pounds, all coming by decision. Northwestern picked up key wins at 141 and 174 pounds, picked up a decision at 149 pounds and earned bonus points at 157 and 285 pounds. The Wildcats finish 7-4 in duals on the season with a 4-4 Big Ten dual record.

Senior Devin Schroder opened the dual with an important win at 125 pounds, posting a 5-0 win over No. 13 Michael DeAugustino. Schroder hit a four-point move in the third period, catching a Peterson out of a scramble and holding DeAugustino on his back for two swipes. Ranked eighth in the country via InterMat, Schroder improved to 17-3 on the year and 13-2 in dual competition, recording his 11th shutout of the season and 42nd of his career. His 94th career win earns him a spot on Purdue's all-time win list, moving into a tie for 20th with Eric Douglas.

Freshman Matt Ramos followed up with a 9-5 decision at 133 pounds, scoring four takedowns in his win over Matt Vinci. Ramos moved to 15-6 overall in his rookie season, including a 12-3 mark in duals. Northwestern won three straight at 141, 149 and 157 pounds, building a 12-6 advantage, but sophomore Hayden Lohrey cut into the least at 165 pounds with a 12-10 decision over David Ferrante. Lohrey reeled off five takedowns over the first two periods to build his lead and avoided going to his back on a throw by Ferrante late. The win is his third straight, building his record to 10-6 overall and gives him 15 Division I matches for the season to earn a chance at an RPI ranking in next week's final NCAA polls.

Both 174 and 184 pounds went to sudden victory, but both matches did not go the Boilermakers' way. The Wildcats took a 3-1 decision at 174, but senior Max Lyon answered for Purdue at 184, scoring a 3-1 win over Jack Jessen. After trading escapes over the first seven minutes, Lyon wasted no time in the overtime. Lyon got to a single leg attack and finished quickly to secure his 11th win of the season.

Junior Thomas Penola knotted the team score at 15-15 at 197 pounds, overcoming an early takedown from Northwestern's Andrew Davison on his way to a 5-3 decision. Penola responded to the first takedown with one of his own late in the first and finished on top for a 3-2 lead. Davison tied the score with an escape in the second, but Penola took the lead for good in the third as Davison was hit for locked hands and then Penola escaped for the final difference. Northwestern finished the match at heavyweight with a technical fall win to account for the final margin in the team score.

Purdue heads into the postseason in two weeks, traveling to Nebraska for the 2022 Big Ten Championships. NCAA conference allocations will be revealed this week, and seeding information for the conference tournament will be released the week of the championships.
