NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Fifth-year senior Kelly Cook Jr. moved up in the school record books once again as the Purdue track & field team opened competition at the Meyo Invitational on Friday at the Loftus Sports Center in Notre Dame, Indiana.
One of nine Boilermakers to compete on the first day of the two-day event at Notre Dame, Cook's mark in the weight throw came with a third-place finish. Purdue added two more top-five finishes on Friday.
Cook improved his place on the top-10 list in program history in the weight throw with a mark of 20.50m to move up one spot to No. 7. It came on his fourth throw of the day as he finished third in the event. His throw is the ninth-best in the Big Ten this season.
Senior teammate Johnny Vanos was fifth overall with a mark of 20.46m. The Boilermaker duo were two of seven competitors to notch a throw of at least 20.00m.
The first event of the day for Purdue was the pole vault, where freshman Grant Gogel was fourth with a clearance of 4.75m. The mark matched his personal-best, which he set in his last meet. Additionally, sophomore Logan Sandlin cleared 4.45m to finish 11th.
A pair of freshmen ran their first-ever collegiate indoor 5,000m. Lauren Bales placed 10th overall in 17:28.56 and Caroline Jordan was 13th with a time of 17:38.98. Fifth-year senior Megan Slamkowski was 14th in 17:42.30.
The meet concluded with the 200m, where again two freshmen raced in the event for the first time as collegiate runners. Owen Schafer and Ryan Farmer were 27th and 28th, respectively, with times of 22.65 and 22.67. The pair registered the fastest two times in their heat.
On Saturday, running events get underway at 9:45 a.m. ET and field events start at 10:30 a.m. The last event for Purdue is at 3:40 p.m.
