WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Six Boilermakers compete for berths at the NCAA Championships as the Zone C Diving Championships return to the University of Kentucky, where the qualifier was also contested last year as the shutdown occurred.

Unlike the customary Thursday to Saturday schedule for Zone C, action is set for Sunday to Tuesday this year at the Lancaster Aquatic Center in Lexington. The event schedule has also been changed and will somewhat mirror what was utilized at the Big Ten Diving Championships. Sunday features the women on 1-meter and the men on 3-meter. Monday, the men move to the platform and the women to 3-meter. Zones concludes Tuesday with the women on the tower and men on 1-meter.

Ben Bramley, Emily Bretscher, Greg Duncan, Brandon Loschiavo, Maggie Merriman and Maycey Vieta are ready to represent Purdue. Prior to last year's shutdown on day 1 of Zones, every Boilermaker that has competed at Zones going back to 2017 had qualified for the NCAA Championships in at least one event.

Loschiavo aims to close out his college career as a four-time NCAAs qualifier. He would join Casey Matthews (2009-10, 2013-14) and Joe Cifelli (2016-19) as Purdue's only divers to accomplish the feat. Emily Meaney (2017-20) was in prime position to join the list as well last year if not for the NCAA shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. Bretscher plans to return next year, which would give her an opportunity to be a four-time qualifier as well. She was named an All-American last year along with Bramley, Duncan, Merriman and Vieta as the CSCAA opted to recognize everyone that did qualify for NCAAs or was a likely qualifier from Zone C.

Duncan had already qualified  for NCAAs on 3-meter on day 1 of Zones last year when the meet was stopped and subsequently canceled during the women's 1-meter final, which featured Bretscher. She qualified for NCAAs in all three events in 2019 and is the only Boilermaker striving to do so again this year.

The Boilermakers won four diving medals at the Big Ten Championships this year, one of each color again. Loschiavo became just the league's fourth three-time champion on the tower. Merriman upgraded from bronze to silver on the platform as she medaled for the second year in a row. Bramley (platform) and Bretscher (3-meter) were bronze medalists while winning their third career medals. Bretscher and Loschiavo finished top 10 in all three events, with Bretscher accomplishing the feat for the second year in a row.

Prior to last season's abbreviated qualifier, Indiana, Ohio State and Purdue had been the only universities to host the Zone C Championships dating back to 2010. Minnesota (2009) was the last outside that trio to host the meet, but was reassigned to Zone D the following season. The 2003 campaign marked the last time a non-Big Ten school hosted the Zone C equivalent. Then called the Central Region Diving Championships, the qualifier was held at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

Not only is Kentucky again hosting this season, but Michigan, Louisville and IUPUI are among the other universities in Zone C expected to host in future seasons. The Greensboro Aquatic Center in North Carolina is set to host both the men's and women's NCAA Championships this month. The women's meet is set for March 17 to 20 and the men's the following week, March 24 to 27

ROAD TO NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS RUNS THROUGH ZONES
Securing at least one automatic-qualifying finish is the key. The top 12 overall in each event remains the other notable portion of the leaderboard. Once a diver has auto-qualified in one event, he or she only has to be among the top 12 in an additional event to also be eligible to compete in it at NCAAs.
Unlike Big Tens and NCAAs, scores carry over from the preliminary to final at Zones. The top 18 qualify for the final.

ZONES ACROSS THE USA
There are five Zone Championships meets around the country. However, instead of five different sites, Greensboro (Zones A & B) and Lexington (Zones C & D) are both hosting a pair this year. Thus, Zone C joins Zone B as the first to get underway Sunday. Northern Arizona also hosts the west's Zone E meet in Flagstaff.
Zone C includes universities in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Kentucky. That means there will be a large Big Ten contingent in attendance at Kentucky's Lancaster Aquatic Center this week. Zone C also features divers from Cincinnati, Kentucky, Louisville, Notre Dame as well as selected Horizon and Summit League, Mid-American and Missouri Valley Conference schools.
Unlike their swimmer counterparts, the divers have to perform well this weekend to qualify for the NCAA Championships. No other scores or results from regular-season competition are considered.
