WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – For the second time in three days, Purdue's men's tennis team hosted a ranked Big Ten opponent on Sunday, falling to No. 9 Illinois by a score of 6-1 in Purdue's first outdoor match of the season.
Illinois took an early 1-0 advantage in doubles play, taking the matches at No. 1 and No. 3 by a score of 6-2 and 6-3, respectively. Tomasz Dudek and Sebastian Welch were up 5-4 at No. 2 when there match was ended.
The sole point for the Boilermakers came via a super tiebreaker at No. 6 in which Tomasz Dudek dominated 10-4 after splitting the first two sets. The sophomore defeated Kweisi Kenyatte by a final match score of 4-6, 6-4, 10-4, and notched his first career dual victory of the season.
After losing the first set at No. 3, Sebastian Welch battled back to win a tiebreaking second set 7-6(4) against No. 122 Zeke Clark, sending the third set into a super tiebreaker. The Chile international went back and forth in a slugfest against his ranked opponent, but eventually lost the set and match in a nail biter 11-9.
Michal Wozniak put up a good fight against No. 15 Alex Brown at No. 2, splitting the first two sets and sending it to a third. The Purdue sophomore fell in a close 6-4 battle in the final set, giving Illinois its sixth point.
Purdue will look to gain some momentum on the road next weekend, visiting Minnesota on Friday and Wisconsin on Sunday. Friday's match is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET and Sunday's is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
