HUMBOLDT, Iowa - The No. 15 Purdue wrestling team took its first loss of the season Sunday, falling to No. 13 Iowa State 23-13 at Humboldt High School. In front of a capacity crowd, head coaches Tony Ersland and Kevin Dresser competed in their high school gymnasium.
The Boilermakers raced out to an 11-0 lead, winning the first three bouts, including two via bonus points. Senior Devin Schroder put up his 37th career shutout and 47th career win via bonus points, posting a 10-0 major decision over Corey Cabanban. Schroder scored in all three periods, nabbing a takedown and turn in the first, a reversal in the second and another takedown in the third, tacking on a penalty point and riding time point down the stretch.
Freshman Matt Ramos won a barn burner at 133 pounds, rallying from a 3-0 deficit for a 5-3 sudden victory over Ramazan Attasauov. Ramos answered a late first-period takedown with one of his own in the second, heading into the third down 3-2. Ramos escaped early in the third, and the match appeared to be going the Cyclones way as Attasauov was awarded a takedown with 15 seconds left in a scramble. Ersland challenged the call and it was reversed, sending the match to overtime at 3-3. Another scramble ensued in the extra period and it was Ramos that came out on top, picking up his 10th win of the season and second in overtime.
The run continued at 141 as Parker Filius used a big third period to take a 14-2 major decision over Charlie Krepps. Filius steadily built a 5-0 lead after the first two periods, mounting a wealth of riding time, but then revved it up in the third, scoring two more takedowns and adding a four-point nearfall. The win is his 10th of the season and third via bonus points.
The tide swung hard in the Cyclones favor at 149 and 157 as No. 24 Jarrett Degan picked up a technical fall and top-ranked Nate Carr scored a fall to match the Boilermakers' 11 team points. More damage came Purdue's way as they were docked a team point as well, making it an 11-10 Iowa State lead at the break.
After the intermission, Purdue grabbed back some momentum with a 5-3 victory for sophomore Hayden Lohrey as he used a pair of takedowns to top ISU's Austin Kraisser and push the team score in the Boilermakers' favor 13-11. However, everything would go the Cyclones way down the stretch as they earned four straight decision wins to finish the dual and earn the win.
The Boilermakers return to action Dec. 29, heading to the Windy City for the Midlands Championships, hosted by Northwestern at NOW Arena.
