MEET INFORMATION
Purdue Divers at the USA Diving Winter Nationals

Tuesday, Dec. 14 to Saturday, Dec. 18 / Daily at 10 a.m. ET
Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center / Bloomington, Indiana

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – With 11 Boilermakers competing in a combined eight events, Purdue is once again well represented as the USA Diving Winter Nationals returns to its customary mid-December place in the schedule while also being contested in Big Ten country at Indiana's aquatics center.

Action is set for Monday through Saturday at IU's Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center in Bloomington. The championship meet will also serve as USA Diving's qualifier for the FINA World Championships (May 13-29 in Fukuoka, Japan) and World University Games (June 26-July 7 in Chengdu, China) in 2022.

Scores are cumulative and carry over from the prelims to the finals. The top 12 in the prelims of the individual events advance to the finals. The top two finishers in the individual events and the victorious team in the synchronized events earn the right to represent USA Diving at the FINA World Championships in May.

This year marks the sixth time since 2010 that a Big Ten Conference aquatic center is hosting the USA Diving Winter Nationals. However, it's the first time since 2015 that the meet is being held in the state of Indiana. The IU Natatorium in Downtown Indianapolis has hosted the last two U.S. Olympic Team Trials as well as the 2015 Winter Nationals.

Purdue's Greg Duncan won his Big Ten title on 3-meter at IU's aquatics center in February 2020. The Boilermakers will also compete in Bloomington on Jan. 22 for the annual rivalry dual with Indiana.

Sam Bennett, Emily (Bretscher) Pfeiffer, Tyler Downs, Sophie McAfee, Maggie Merriman, Jordan Rzepka, Jenna Sonnenberg and Maycey Vieta join Duncan as the nine active Purdue student-athletes scheduled to complete. Fresh off representing USA Diving at the inaugural Junior Pan American Games in Columbia, National Letter of Intent signee and incoming Boilermaker Daryn Wright (Plainfield, Ind.) is also entered this week in the women's 3-meter and 10-meter events.

Highlighted by Downs' victory on 3-meter that made him an Olympian, six of the active Boilermakers competing this week were finalists at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in June. Maycey Vieta (10-meter for Puerto Rico at the FINA Diving World Cup) joined Downs and Wright as those who have competed internationally this year. Meanwhile, Duncan and Pfeiffer both represented USA Diving at the 2019 World University Games in Italy.

Alumni David Colturi (2008-10) and Steven LoBue (2004-07) were prominent in the addition of Wednesday's high dive event to Winter Nationals, a 10-meter exhibition in which the competitors will enter the water feet first. It is intended to spotlight feet-first high diving. However, they won't be in attendance this week as they prepare to compete at the FINA High Diving Qualifier as part of the Abu Dhabi Aquatics Festival in the United Arab Emirates. They're scheduled to compete from 27 meters Dec. 19 to 20, a meet that serves as the qualifier for the FINA World Championships. Colturi and LoBue have both won international medals in high diving and have been among the most prominent Americans competing on the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series.

The USA Diving Winter Nationals became a regular meet on the USA Diving calendar beginning in February 2010. The meet moved to December during the 2011-12 school year and was not held in December 2012 as that Olympic cycle came to a close.

Divers that have competed for Purdue at some point have combined to win 53 medals – 18 individual, 35 synchro – at the Winter Nationals since 2010, claiming at least one medal every year the meet has been held. That total of 53 includes medals won by divers before they officially enrolled at Purdue. That includes current freshmen Sophie McAfee, Jordan Rzepka and Downs, with Rzepka and Downs winning gold together in 10-meter synchro in 2018.

The Boilermakers won six medals in synchronized events at the 2019 Winter Nationals in Minneapolis, marking the last time the meet was held. David Boudia, Steele Johnson and Brandon Loschiavo were all victorious in synchronized events to clinch U.S. bids for the FINA Diving World Cup. However, the FINA Diving World Cup was postponed multiple times over the year that followed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
