Brackets & Team Scores Opens in a new window
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Seniors Devin Schroder and Parker Filius, and junior Kendall Coleman all advanced to the semifinals of the 2021 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Friday as the Purdue wrestling team sits in third place after the first day of competition. The trio have locked up their spots on the tournament podium, while five other Boilermakers have a shot at placing as well in tomorrow's morning session, which begins at noon ET.

The Boilermakers have 53.0 points trailing tournament leaders Nebraska (72.5) and Ohio State (71.0), and holding a tight margin over Michigan (51.0). Wins in tomorrow's semifinals are worth seven team points, while consolation bracket wins are worth 3.5 points (in addition to any bonus points earned).

Schroder advanced with a hard-fought 1-0 decision over Navy's seventh-seeded Jacob Allen, picking up his only point on an escape in the third. Both wrestlers got in on a few shots, but neither could finish, and the difference proved to be Allen's unwillingness to take the bottom position in the second period, when he had choice. Schroder will meet sixth-seeded Brandon Kaylor of Oregon State in tomorrow's semifinals.

Filius scored a quartet of takedowns in a 9-4 decision over No. 4 seed Grant Willits of Oregon State. He scored twice in the opening period and added another takedown in both the second and the third as he secured his first career spot on the CKLV podium. Tomorrow's semifinal match is a 2021 NCAA Championship first-round rematch between Filius and South Dakota State's top-seeded Clay Carlson.

Coleman knocked off fifth-seeded Jacob Wright of Wyoming to advance to his second career CKLV semifinal, where he'll meet top-seed Ryan Deakin of Northwestern. Coleman posted a pair of quick takedowns in the first and accounted for the final margin with another takedown in the second.

Freshman Matt Ramos has already claimed his placing and bonus points as he will receive a forfeit in the Round of 12 from No. 2 seed California State Bakersfield's Chance Rich, who was injured Friday. Ramos advanced Friday evening with a 4-1 decision over Anthony Petrillo of Sacred Heart, giving Purdue at least four placewinners for the tournament.

Other consolation wins came from junior Thomas Penola and senior Michael Woulfe, who advanced one match closer to placing with victories at 197 and 285. Penola recovered from an early deficit to post a 13-5 major decision over Stanford's Nick Stemmet, while Woulfe outlasted Kent State's Jacob Cover, earning a 2-1 tiebreaker victory. Penola will battle No. 8 seed Jacob Cardenas of Cornell in the Round of 12, and Woulfe is set to face No. 8 seed Joe Doyle of Binghamton.

Sophomore Gerrit Nijenhuis and senior Max Lyon fell short in their bids for the semifinals, but will compete for a podium spot Saturday. Nijenhuis meets No. 12 seed Tyler Eischens of Stanford, while Lyon is matched with Jacob Hansen of California State Bakersfield.
