Newton, Colvin Receive Big Ten Weekly Award Accolades

Following a pair of top-10 victories on the road, Caitlyn Newton was named Big Ten Player of the Week and Raven Colvin Big Ten Freshman of the Week, announced by the conference office Monday.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Following a pair of top-10 victories on the road, Caitlyn Newton was named Big Ten Player of the Week and Raven Colvin Big Ten Freshman of the Week, announced by the conference office Monday.

Newton and Colvin helped to lead the then-No. 9 Boilermakers to a pair of 3-1 victories at No. 4 Wisconsin and No. 8 Minnesota over the weekend to bring the team's win streak to six-straight. The road victories were significant, not only snapping Wisconsin's 33-match home win streak to complete a season sweep of the Badgers, but also notching the program's first win at Minnesota since 1998.

The recognition is the first weekly award of Newton's career and the second for Colvin. Moreover, Newton's honor marks the first Player of the Week nod since Grace Cleveland last season (3/29/21).

Despite averaging 3.86 kills per set entering the weekend, Newton lit up the court, securing 4.75 kills over the team's eight sets. Moreover, Newton posted a team-leading 38 total kills while hitting at a .220 efficiency last week. First, at No. 4 Wisconsin, Newton led both teams with 19 kills and came within one dig of a double-double. Moreover, she posted a career-high-tying six block assists. Then just 48 hours later, Newton led the team with another 19-kill performance at No. 8 Minnesota to go alongside a season-high five aces.

Colvin posted seven kills with just one error on 13 swings for a .462 attack % at Minnesota, the most efficient performance of the day by either team. Moreover, Colvin totaled six assisted stuffs in the match to help hold Minnesota to a .165 attack %. At No. 4 Wisconsin, the freshman added two kills and a pair of block assists. In total, Colvin averaged 1.5 kills per set and 1.33 blocks per set with a .316 hitting % in the road wins.

As a whole, Newton and Colvin helped to limit Minnesota and Wisconsin to an average .146 hitting %, including the Big Ten leader in efficiency (Wisconsin).
